The two pillars are what remains of the old D Maria II susoension bridge acfross the river which was completed in 1842 and then called the Suspension Bridge and later name after Maria II. It was replaced by the current bridge and the two pillars have been retained.They trnd to get lost under the current bridge.

Well... it is two old pillars and quiclky overlooked. But the view in breathtaking and the the whole Ribeira city quarter is cosy and well worth the visit. So while visiting Ribeira, make sure to swing by the old pillars. Beneath the pillars at ground level there are some nice café playing live music in the weekend.

These two columns are part of an old suspension bridge which was in operation 1843-1887 until the new bridge Dom Luis I was opened.

Located art the base of the steel bridge, stands two pillars which is what is left of an extension (The Pensil Bridge)bridge the crossed the Douro river.

Just around this historical bridge there’s lots of cafes and souvenir stalls plus barges and boat taxis that one can take to cross over to Gaia.
We were as a meeting point for our Port Wine Lodges Tour including 7 tasting we booked from Tripadvisor.
Easy to find this bridge and wonderful to get to it as we get to see other bits along our walk to it.

Right next to the Ponte Luis I bridge are a pair of towers which are popular for tourists and visitors. Once (pre 1880) there was an older (and aging) bridge that was replaced by the super-dooper Ponte de Dom Luis I creation that succeeded its predecessor.
How fortunate we all should consider ourselves that the city did not remove these granite treasures. Today, it is a fun place to ascend and look around but it is in a very busy place with lots of traffic so exercise caution.

The Luis I Bridge is one of the biggest attractions of Porto. It is good that the old bridge pillars were preserved after its predecessor, the D. Maria II Bridge. The powerful stone pillars of the bridge built in 1843 show the true capabilities of ancient builders and are a specific reminder of old construction projects.
