It is located on Largo de Oliveria. It is definitely an amazing church. Not just it is a part of the culture but architecture wise it is also amazing. Inside of the church is another story. You will be impressed for sure. You can spend lots of time inside by embracing serenity and peace. Recommended strongly!

Beautiful Church on Olive Square. Gorgeous hipoed wooden roof beams inside with old world style blocks on the walls.
Lovely iconography. Watch for the vivid painting of Pope John Paul II on the right as you walk in. Beautiful gilded altar in dim light. Sunlight was spilling in from the windows to the right on my visit, gave the whole place a warm glow.
It was such a peaceful church and perhaps the most beautiful one I saw in Guimaraes.

Our Viking River Cruise tour of Guimaraes did not take us here, although we did walk by and the place was mentioned. However, we decided to stop in and take a look during our free time. Once a former monastery, this historic Gothic church, consecrated in 1401, is located in Largo da Oliveria, a medieval square in the old town. There was no charge to visit.

At the very heart of the Historical Center of Guimarães, at Oliveira Square ("Largo da Oliveira", in the Portuguese language), you will find the beautiful church of Our Lady of the Olive Tree ("Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira"), built over the ruins of an old monastery in romanic style. Countess Mumadona Dias, the most powerful and rich woman at the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula at her time, comissioned its construction at the year of 950 AD. After many reconstructions and restorations, the church is still there, but with gothic caractheristics. Visit the main chapel and its beautiful paintings totally dedicated to Virgen Mary's life. One last remark: the famous monument "Padrão do Salado" is just in front of it! Enjoy!

The olive tree just outside the church is said to have been dead until a major victory by the Portugese king over the Moors in Ceuta, Africa. The tree reanimated and this was attributed the Holy Mother-hence the name of the chutch. Thechurch itselfis less ornate than many in the area, but worth seeing.

I was deeply moved by the iconic carvings and art found within this intimate and beautiful Church, with a Romanesque arched nave. Situated on the Largo da Oliveira Square, this is all that remains of the Monastery that the Castelo de Guimaraes was built to defend. The current church's cornerstone was laid 1/1/1384. The bell tower is in the Manueline style, and the Gothic Padrao do Salado Shrine presides over its entrance. Note the lovely stained glass window upon entry, as the sunlight illuminates. Spend quality time within to absorb its sanctity, or enjoy a respite in the Plaza outside to eat or enjoy a refreshment and view its historic splendor, and all that the Square has to offer.

This church is located in a popular and central spot. The Square in front of the church is relatively quite large, and there are cafes and restaurants in the vicinity with outside seating. The building is quite good looking, in a way, but the interior is not as elaborate as some other churches. However the architecture can be quite breathtaking.

Worth briefly visiting for the legend of Wamba...an Olive tree, not the original, and a shrine stand in the forecourt of the church.

You are in Guimaraes..why not?

At the current location a pre-Romanesque monastery was founded by Mumadona Dias in 949. For its protection a fortification, that preceded the present Castle of Guimarães, was erected. In the beginning of the twelfth century, this monastery would give place to the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria de Guimarães, one of the most important and rich religious institutions in the country during the Low Middle Ages.
It was declared a national monument in 1910

The Church of Our Lady of Oliveira is on the site of a monastery that was built in 950AD. The church itself dates back to 1342 and has had several additions and alterations since. The church tower was completed about 1515 and some of the chapels were rebuilt in the 19th century. It has been considered a national monument since 1910.

Whilst clearly a historic church, it isn't a particularly outstanding church to visit. Still, it's worth a quick visit if you are in the vicinity. Admission is free.
