A very unusual monument in the heart of Praca D'Oliveira in front if the church. It commemorates those who died defending the city from the Muslims in 1340. There is a cross on a sort of gothic style portico. It is a beguiling piece of work actually and I couldn't help but come back to it a few times during my time in Guimaraes.

This 14th century Gothic shrine housing a cross sits in the medieval square Largo da Oliveria. While it looks to be part of the adjacent church, it was constructed to commemorate the 1340 victory at the Battle of Salado against the Moors. How fitting to erect the enduring symbol of Christianity, a cross. Make sure you visit the church, Our Lady of the Olive Tree.

While visiting Guimarães and strolling around its Historical Center, you'll find yourself many many times in front of this gothic monument, right at the Oliveira Square, facing the famous Church of Our Lady of the Olive Tree ("Nossa Senhora da Oliveira", in the Portuguese language). It has been there since the 14th Century, honoring the victory of the Portuguese and Spanish armies in the Battle of Salado, in the Province of Cádiz (Spain), where the moorish kings of Granada and Morocco were defeated. The monument, built by D. Afonso IV, King of Portugal, with its gothic árcades, is beautiful and unique. A quick visit is highly recommended. Enjoy!

We came across this lovely monument without immediately realising what it was, thinking it part of the church. It is in front of the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church and is quite difficult to distinguish it as being something completely different. However once you realise what it really is then you come to appreciate it for its great historical significance. It is a 14th century monument commemorating the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Salado in 1340, against a Muslim army. This is not something you would go out of your way to visit, however, you really cannot miss it. You will most probably come face to face with it because you are bound to visit this beautiful Square, Largo da Oliveira, to visit its cafes or restaurants or the nice church, or all of the above!

It's a Gothic monument that sits in a medieval square next to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. It has a cross and four arches and it commemorates a battle victory. Places to eat and drink around the square as well.

Located within the Largo da Oliveiras Square, just outside of the Igreja da Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church, stands this lovely Gothic Shrine. Construction of the Gothic monument was ordered by Afonso IV to commemorate the Battle of Salado in 1340. A cross stands within this beautiful architectural shrine, one of the many sites within this central historic hub of Guimaraes. Within the Largo da Oliveiras are numerous cafes offering inside and alfresco dining. I would recommend having lunch or a refreshment in this area, to absorb all that this Square has to offer, and to more thoroughly inspect this moving structure.

This monument is dedicated to the olive tree that got cut down and it is a staple of this square and it is located right next to the church of Senhora da Oliveira. It is a must see in this town and a short stop.

Situated near the church in the delightful Largo da Oliveira, this Gothic shrine dates from the 14th century and was constructed to commemorate the victory against the Moors at the Battle of Salado in 1340. The inclusion of a cross in the shrine emphasises the religious significance of the battle.
