I visited the museum on the second day of my stay in the city. The price was good (only a couple euros) and it was definitely worth it. The gardens were beautiful and quite relaxing. The house itself can only be visited as part of a “tour”, as in you’ll be in a group with a guide, who’ll open each room after everybody will be done with the one being currently visited. The house boasts an astonishing collection of paintings and period furniture. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the city!!

To pay 4 euros and see such a house with valuable objects and also access a quaint garden is totally surprising! We probably liked most the kitchen.

If you take your time looking through the garden areas that you can explore on your own and really take in the beautiful tiles and architecture of the house, you will enjoy your experience. Gorgeous tiling all over!

Museu dos Biscainhos is a good museum, in a way.... depending how you view your experience. The tours offered are the only way to enter and inspect the museum. They are, however, quite restrictive timewise and that means you do not always get enough time to view and absorb whatever is exhibited. The guides are there more to guard, rather than guide, as well as to push visitors along and finish the so called tour on time. There are information cards in English which visitors are meant to use, but unless you are a speed reading champion you will not be able to get all the information or to actually view the objects and other things displayed. The Garden is also great and you are not rushed like in the museum.

The visit begins with a view of the gardens and then you can walk through the palace but with a guide. Panels in English are in each room. The rooms are furnished so they give you a good idea of how the rich lived in the 1700’s. Interesting about the role of aristocratic women. Still influenced by the muslims women stayed in the home and sat on carpets on the floor. The stables and kitchen are also interesting. Very close to the cathedral.
