About
The D. Diogo de Sousa Museum of Archaeology works on the support of archaeological research, conservation and promotion of regional archaeological sites and artefacts through display and educational activities. The museum is open to the public since June 2007 in a fantastic new building with roman ruins preserved ‘in situ’.The permanent exhibition starts in the corridor at the entrance with a brief explanation of the museum’s history followed by the collection from the Palaeolithic to the Early Midle Age. Most part of the exhibition shows how Bracara Augusta (roman town Braga) was integrated into the Roman Empire, the urban development of the city, the organization of public and domestic areas, the roads and the nearby necropolises and the religion in roman and paleo-christian times.

We three middle aged British guys had some time to explore this museum. Unfortunately the nearby Roman Baths were closed because of the festival.
We crossed the giant concourse to enter the modern building and pay our €3 each for the museum.
To the right of the cashier’s desk was the first room full of Roman and Greek artefacts well lit and presented with English translations.
Passing the cashier’s desk you go along a long corridor to enter the main museum of displays and then downstairs to some more. All very impressive with some excellent models.
We knew there was a large mosaic in the museum but there were no big signs. We were looking through a temporary exhibition of Disabled sports people and I asked my friend where the mosaic was. A worker overheard me and took me outside by the restaurant/cafe (restaurant was only open for lunch) and showed us an unlabelled ramp to the mosaics. Down we went to find the large underground square with an exhibition round the walls. The signs to this major attraction were really bad! We had a look around there four sides, a video was being shown in a room of something but there was no interpretation. The mosaic had little interpretation in Portuguese and none in English…such a shame!
We then wandered through a children’s play and pupils’ study area, up the stairs and left.
Altogether a good place to go to learn a free things about the area but there was not enough English translations of some important pieces and displays.

A nice place to visit on a rainy day. The staff are super kind and the exhibits are well displayed and labeled, showing a number of ancient Roman jars and glass fragments. There is a panel describing regional petroglifos, yet we wished there was much more. Downstairs in the building is a collection of Roman mile marker stone pillars. Outside on the cafe patio you will find the unlabeled stairs, under an awning, leading down to the non-colorful mosaic (brown & white tile). It is admirable how well the museum has preserved these items from Braga's past.

The museum is a little bit out of the town centre but is walkable c. 1km. The outside and layout is kind of modernist in intention. After getting your ticket you walk down a long corridor to the first rooms but I found the articles on the walls too small to read properly even squatting down a bit. The thrust of the modern is reflected in the minimalist explanations and designation of artefacts. The artefacts though are pretty good. However it would be nice to have had some explanation of the roman inscriptions of the stone plinths which were impressive. There are small guide notebooks on each floor but I could only find one (I was alone in the museum) but again had a real problem working out a) what exhibits they referred to and b) disappointed at the absence of any further explanations or background to the exhibits which was a shame as some were worthy. I only found out about the outside access to the roman ruins of a house by asking at reception whether I had missed anything. Similarly I had to ask where one of the key exhibits was (blue decorated silver saucer) and had to return and squat down to admire its beauty. It is a good museum but is let down mainly by the absence of background and explanations on what are in fact good displays. Didn't try the cafe as I was the only one there and it didn't seem to be open.Perhaps bad timing.

Clean, spacious and modern museum, interactive, lots of information, great reconstructions of several Roman buildings that once stood in Braga. Good museum shop, don't forget to go outside and visit the basement with the Roman mosaic.
After a visit to this museum (not in the centre of the city unfortunately, but near the remains of the Roman bathhouse!...) you will certainly be inspired to go to the tourist information to get the map with all the Roman features of the city.

My partner and I visited this museum after a trip to the tourism centre in central Braga. It costs €3 per person for entry with a range of discounts provided for students and over 60s. The price was very reasonable for what lay within. The museum had numerous interesting artifacts about Roman Braga. It provides an undeniable oust of culture and history to provide an insight into the significance of Roman Braga. More information on the exhibits would have been desirable but the lack of information can lead to historical predictions and hypotheses being made as you progress through the exhibits. The staff were amazing and had a wealth of knowledge, if any questions were had. Definitely worth a visit.

I'm one of those who believe that museums ought to be free. I was told this was but it wasn't. I have no special interest nor do I have sufficient understanding to warrant paying to go in. There are some parts which are open to non-paying visitors, but they didn't do anything for me, nor did the building itself. What was more interesting was the commemorative structure just before the museum, titled "Movimento Perpétuo", which I supposed was influenced by the ancient arches of the city. See photo.

Braga is a city of beautiful architecture and design...how could its newest museum be such a poorly designed mess? The approach is so ugly and unwelcoming. Tiny display cases with even tinier type line the entryways. The mosaic house is in an unmarked location our friends missed. .we only saw it because a guide saw us entering an off-limits space (with a wide open door) and redirected us. Many unlabeled display cases.

don't forget to start or end your visit at the really nice cafeteria with a daily menu of simple dishes from northern portugal. very affordable and a comfortable place for a break. lady at the entrance reception said 80% of visitors (presumably locals) come just for the lunches!

After many years of delay the Braga Museum of Archeology finally opened 4 years ago. That is why it may not show up in some guidebooks.
It is by no means a big or first rate museum. This is not the British Museum. Still Braga was once the capital of the northern roman province of Gaelicia, an important commercial city and was well connected by 5 roman roads that are still used to this day. Getting to know this roman past is part of understanding and enjoying Braga. If you have a longer stay in town or just love history like myself I do recommend this museum.
1) Do request to see the introductory video (in Portuguese but you can figure out they are talking about finding and fixing archeological discoveries). Also in the patio of the museum is the entrance to a Roman house discovered when they built the museum foundations.
2) Sundays entrance is free until 2 pm. Otherwise its something like 2-3 Euro entrance.
3) Nearby is a roman thermal bath with a video explanation also worth visiting.
4) Around town they are roman houses, walls and a fountain idol to be visited. All part of the urban landscape. Beneath the train station you can find a pre-roman steam bath !
