We waited almost an hour for the funicular to take us down the hill. There is no schedule posted and the service does not conform to the frequency in the Lonely Planet guide. Staff do not seem to care when then choose to operate.

Elevador do Bom Jesus do Monte is the best option to avoid the 600 steps needed to climb to the sanctuary. One way to use it is to take the funicular till the sanctuary and then go down by the 600 steps stair which is...More

We bought a return ticket 2 euros each and the short ride is worth it if you are not capable of walking the steps. O

Amazing old fashioned tram that uses water as the only power source!!! We spent a nice day in the woods and the sanctuary on top of the hill has a stunning view over the city. It is worth to use the one way trip to...More

As well as making it easy to get to the top, this funicular appears to be driven by water weight. We have been on a few in the past but this method was a first for us.

A nice way to go up to bom jesus and a good way to preserve your energy. but you should go down by foot to see the magnific view of the church ant the stairs in front of it.

It is not so long, nor really helpful in getting up (as you can drive), but it is fairly cheap (1.5 EUR one way, 2 EUR return) attraction, which is interesting from the operational and history view - it is oldest funicular of this type...More

Ride this funicular for a nice steep ride up to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus. It accommodates about 35 people and it Is a hydraulic system using water to make the cars go up and down.

I was told that this is one of the oldest elevators in Europe using the water system. The trip is fast but very nice and relaxing. You can easily park the car for free and use the elevator to go up to Bom Jesus.
