Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If Coimbra disappointed me, Braga was a pleasant surprise. We visited it from Guimarães, we planned to dedicate only one day to it because several people who knew it commented that it was an unattractive city, with a not very interesting historic center, for this reason I went with low expectations It is true that it is not comparable to Porto, but it is far from being the bland and boring city that is attributed to it.
One day was not enough to cover the entire historic center, we walked calmly, we did not want to do a marathon, therefore there were some places that we could not see, mainly the interiors of some monuments. We didn't go to Bom Jesus either because it was further away from the center. But we liked everything we saw: avenues,
streets, gardens, squares, old cafes, churches and historic residences. We regret not having spent a night in this lively and underrated city.
We were there on July 14, 2023.

The main square of Braga. Very nice to stroll along the centre which is pedestrianised. It has a fountain which was dry on my visit, and a bandstand with grassy areas which the locals lounge on while eating lunch. Some very impressive buildings chief among them the Basilica Dos Congregados. Well worth a visit.

Praca da Republica is a great public space. It's large-ish, and the area around is like a long, stretched out park, full of greenery and beautiful colourful flowers. They take care of this area, as we observed a number of workers tending to the plants. A great place to wander through, to visit shops and do some shopping, and to sit down at one of the local cafes or restaurants, have a coffee or a meal, or both, and just watch the world go by.

Nice, big square, with many restaurants around, few churches, fountains and growing flowers. Nice place to sit, relax and enjoy or just walk around. Worth seeing.

The plaza is a large, open area with restaurants and shopping surrounding it. From the plaza you have a lovely view of the large fountain, the Avenida da Liberdade which is filled with shops and cafes, and the parkway along Avenida Central. The tourism information center for Braga is also on one corner of the plaza.
For Semana Santa, the area becomes a street fair with booths selling a variety of crafts and holiday treats.

If I was to live anywhere in Portugal, it would be in Braga. Though it is often derided in tourist guides as ‘over-religious’ & ‘buttoned-up’ we did not find it so at all. It has a great balance of commerce, tourist sights and religious places. And it’s very friendly. The centre of town is the Placa da Republica from which several pedestrianized street shoot off, including the Avenida da Liberdade. Others might have made this wide street into a major bus & car route. Braga carpeted it with flowers.
On our visit this main square was hosting some sort of Book Fair, and there were a number of inviting marquees & stall with differing books. There were three fountains with a seemingly infinite variety of water jets, lots of cafes with shady open-air seating. The only actual permanent building in the square (rather than alongside it) was McDonalds: which rather shocked us. Actually it was very tastefully done – and clearly very popular, with its own array of open air seating.
We went into the church on Avenida Central (fronting the square) thinking it to be the Cathedral as people were piling in for a late afternoon midweek service. Actually it was the Ingreja dos Congregados, an ordinary parish church, very tastefully decorated, and clearly full of life.
We found a huge variety of shops in the immediate vicinity as well as a very helpful ‘Tourismo’ on the corner – and we didn’t even go into the Braga Shopping Mall on the other side of Avenida Centre. Braga and its central square is a very pleasant place to be.

One of the most beautiful squares seen in my trip to Portugal. Impossible not to stop in front of the masterful fountain to take some photos and not to take a walk along the garden.
