Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This spot is very important in Portugals history: it was one of the first palaces the Portuguese monarch stayed in. People say that Portugal was 'born' in Barcelos.

As you cross the bridge to Barcelos on the Camino Portugues you come up on the ruins of this historic castle. The remains of this castle allow you to get a feel of the history of Barcelos as a part of the route of the early pilgrims on the way to Santiago. It's a beautiful view at the top to the Cavado River. It's one of those can't miss historic monuments of the Camino Portugues.

One more piece of the puzzle of the fascinating history of Portugal can be found in the ruins of this castle, sitting on top of a small hill overlooking Cávados River.
The drawings in the tiles show how imposing and magnificent it once was.

You can find historical heritage in a unique archeological collection in the heart of the town. The surrounding landscape is full of medieval buildings including the medieval bridge, framed by the Cávado river. Excellent for ex-libris photographs.

The Paço dos Condes de Barcelos ou Paço dos Duques de Bragança, situated in Barcelos, who is in the Braga district, was once a Palace in gótic style and actualy it is a ruin. It has being constructed in the first half of the XV century.
This Palace, who has been a Castle turned into a Palace, nowadays there are only some walls and a chimney, the degradation of this Palace started at the end of the XVIII.
With his four great he size of the construction was about 32 meters long by 16 meters wide.
Today it is the “Archeologic Museum of Barcelos”, and situated next door to the “Igreja Matriz”. You have to see this ruin as a historical place of a great interest, worth wile to spend some time to visit and feel the history.

The Barcelos Rooster, commonly called the Portuguese Rooster, is considered to be the unofficial symbol of Portugal. You can find this emblem in many forms in every local shop and especially gift shops. This national symbol is mostly found in its typical ceramic form as well as embroidered on towels and aprons. Other souvenirs include key-chains, paperweights, and other popular tourism gifts. The Barcelos Rooster is always vividly colored and is said to represent the embodiment of the famous Portuguese love of life. I loved every moment visiting the town and we (me and Gabriel - my husband) enjoyed for lunch a 'Portuguese sandwich' - half each - the delicious Francesinha, a MUST try it.

Paço dos Condes de Barcelos is a palace in ruins located in the old part of Barcelos, a town in the North of Portugal. It is located in a high point, so from here you can see very beautiful views of surroundings. Also, it is a little, but very interesting museum with some old stones. Very interesting if you like stones and views.

We wandered along the narrow lanes to visit the derelict Earl’s Palace, constructed between 1406-1412 for Afonso, Barcelo’s 8th earl. It was damaged in an earthquake and fell into disrepair between the 17th-18th centuries. In 1910, it was declared a national monument. A couple of azulejos on the wall of the palace give a glimpse of what it looked like whilst it was still intact.
The palace is now a shadow of its former glory, but it is still worth a visit. The grounds are open and there is no admission fee. Several of the walls have been demolished and the upper flooring is long gone, but some of the features remain. The single tall chimney rises up from a large fireplace in a second floor room (now visible from the room below). There are also some monuments and stone inscriptions within the grounds. There is a nice view over the bridge (built between 1325 and 1328) and the River Cávado. Adjacent to the palace is the 15th century pillory, set in a small, neatly landscaped area.

I liked this castle ruins in Barcelos, It was peaceful and interesting with some information tiles attached to the walls where you could read about is's history. And it's completely free of charge. The view from the castle is great over the river and to Barcelinhos.
