What a surprise
Mar. 2019 • Couples
We stopped here for coffee at the Snug and noticed some artisan stalls and an arrow pointing to a toy museum. We purchased a ticket in a charming toy shop near the entrance and went upstairs to view the 20,000 exhibits. Nostalgia immediately hit us as some of the toys were our era and so many from our sons era. The place is immaculate and the toys in fabulous condition. Watch out for Hitler parading with an SS marching band next to Her Majesty the Queen in her state carriage. What a surprise.

Perhaps a little too small
Nov. 2018 • Couples
Nice extra when visiting the Funchal Farmers Market. But it's not that big. Realy nice little shops, and some small cafés/eating area. It's more the alternative sphere.
If the place was double as big, it would be a must see.

must see
Jan. 2017 • Friends
When visiting the Funchal the Armazem do Mercado or the local market is a must see attraction. The place serves with a variety of local food (different colors and texture), exotic flowers from the island and fish market where every morning the locals come to sell and buy a most known fish of the island.

Nothing special

If you don't have much time, it's not a "must visit" place. some shops are closed and besides 2 cafés and 2 toy shops you don't have much to see.

A modern days market for regional and handycraft products and articles. Not very big and easy to visit and see without rush.

Disappointing

We visited last year and found a lovely little cafe serving cakes and coffee. This year it had changed and now serves crepes and drinks. The coffee was ok but we won't bother going back. The craft shops were interesting but expensive.

Nice local shopping area.
Sep. 2015 • Couples
This shopping area was part of a tour that we took from our cruise ship. There are a number of local vendors, craft type stores, food / snack locations, book stores, etc. located around an open air courtyard. We picked up some children's books that were written in Portuguese for the grandkids. Nice place to browse and locate some different items that are created locally.

taken part in cookexperiene; toy museum and history tellers
Mar. 2016 • Friends
Every event was outstanding , I took a group of English speakers from Madeira and we had the most wonderful fun and learning experience. We are looking forward to doing the arts and crafts soon. Outstanding staff. Outstanding experience . Well done all!
With the cook experience we went to the market and got to know a lot of new fruits and vegetables and then went back to cook a typical Madeira meal in which we all took part and all ate what we had made. We even made a Poncha the local drink!

When we visited the Toy museum we had a guided tour and even met the man which made the collection which is remarkable.

The History tellers gave us a guided review of the Old Town and some lof its History. Despite being a foreign student the English was exemplary and the stories great fin and interesting

Looked good!
Mar. 2016 • Friends
Went there for a short visit, wanted to have a look in the small shops and maybe buy some local hand crafted and designed stuff. But unfortunately they where all but one closed. (This was around 18.00 in the evening) The one that was open had ecological stuff for sale, nice to see!
We had a look inside as well, didn't go to the toy museum though, they sold little bit of souvenirs (mostly eatable or drinkable) and quality toys inside.
They had a very nice courtyard where you could have a drink. Overall I got a positive feeling, it was very fresh, clean, modern and young. Would like to see what's inside those shops though!

Tours and burgers
Feb. 2016
Head here for a number of reasons: tours led by students of the old town, very cheap and proceeds go to help poorer students. Good gift shop, profits for the same good cause: and your tour ends with a glass of wine and a cookie.

Downstairs is an up-market burger bar, veggie food (hooray!)
