Our walking trips around parts of Funchal included discovering the above beautifull building. We did not go inside but it is in a lovely square with a small market inone corner.

A beautiful Church in a beautiful location. This is a very ornate Church, especially the altar area. It was lovely to see locals coming in to pray or just sit, so it is necessary to be circumspect. Besides the tranquility of the Church, the views from the location are magnificent, looking down on the urban sprawl of Funchal.

Climb the narrow staircase to the top for fabulous views. You can watch visitors starting their toboggan rides. Inside the church is ornate and peaceful.

Took the bus to Monte, what fantastic views, the sun was shining and we had a walk around coundnt see the gardens as they had been burnt earlier in the year by forest fire caused by some person filling a tyre with rags and setting it alight and letting it roll down the mountain. The christmas scene in the church... More

If you are visiting Monte make sure you climb your way on the roof of this church! Beautiful views to the city. You can also enjoy the terrified faces of travellers on the starting point of Toboggan-ride. :)

The Church of our Lady of Monte was a pleasure to behold and I have so much respect for the people who built the original Church and then rebuilt it after the earthquake in 1818. It was a pleasure to light some candles for family and friends and we hope to return to this wonderful inspiring church.

Its located at quite an elevation. Good view from the top during morning and night. Harbour and the Whole city is visible. Connected by the city buses. Small but beautiful from inside.

Nice church, been there in January and the Nativity was still there, quite unusual. Overall the outside is better than the inside.

Near to the tropical garden entrance, steep climb / stairs but worth it, lovely building and fantastic views of the surrounding area.
