Excellent place to visit & beautifully decorated even though it was January all the Christmas pointsettiers were decorating the high altar with a wonderful nativity scene, great views looking down from the steps onto the famous Toboggan run looking down on Funchal.

I believe that the church opens early and each time I have been up to Monte it has been open, even if there are services on. The bell towers and upper floor are open via a door which does not intrude should a service be on- then once the service is ended it is possible to wander around this beautiful church.
Should you not wish to intrude during a service then there is a lovely chapel within the tea gardens close by.
