The church is in a stunning location, with views to match. It is surrounded by a network of pathways through well maintained gardens. Walk past the church and the toboggan ride to Largo Da Fonte where a small cafe sits in a square that seems...More

A great, unique building with lots of decoration inside. The church can be seen from far away, such as down below in Funchal. At the steps below the building, or stood just outside, you can gaze at the wonderful views.

I have been here a few times before and love the views to Funchal.Loads of steps though so you need to be fit unless you use another route to get to it. Pity its Catholic - thats the only negative.

An interesting small church with lovely views from the front steps over Funchal. It was very quiet with a few visitors and some people at prayer. The tomb of Charles 1 the last ruler of the Austria-Hungarian empire was especially interesting. Worth a short visit.

Most people visiting Monte are more attracted to the sledges outside. They've missed a treat. Inside, in a sombre casket behind bars, lies the body of Charles 1 - last emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He died in exile in a villa around the corner...More

we visited this impressive building upon alighting from the cable car near the promenade. The building inside is stunning and the views from outside are equally as impressive

I believe that the church opens early and each time I have been up to Monte it has been open, even if there are services on. The bell towers and upper floor are open via a door which does not intrude should a service be on... More
