- Cara E8 contributionsReopened in May. A must to see.A very peaceful place, easily found. Friendly and helpful staff. The convent has undergone extensive renovation and there is so much to see. Reasonably priced and half price if you are a pensioner. Would highly recommend.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 December 2023
- kathyinsurrey118 contributionsBeautiful and Spiritual ConventThis recently refurbished and reopened convent is definitely worth a visit. It is a short steepish walk out of the main town and easy to find. We were warmly welcomed by the lady at reception on our arrival and the entrance fee, at the time of our visit, was about 5 euros for both of us (being retired). The church is stunning (as so many of the churches in Funchal are) but the fascinating thing about this particularly church (which I have never seen before anywhere on my travels) is how the church and the convent inter-connect (think "Sound of Music"). The upper and lower choirs where the nuns would have sat and the grille through which they would have observed mass are wonderfully preserved with the seating and the ornate religious imagery in place. The cloisters are a wonderfully tranquil setting around which a number of amazing and tiny chapels are positioned. There is a lot of information in English and some insight into what it would have been like to have been a nun there a few hundred years ago. There is also a "mock-up" of a nun's cell which indicates that perhaps the "Poor Clares", the order of nun's there, were not quite so poor as you might imagine! If you are in need of some refreshment after your visit here I would recommend going across the road to the Museu da Quinta Das Cruzes where you will find a delightful cafe in the garden with wonderful views of the town, serving coffee and cakes or, indeed, a meal. The gardens there are well worth a wander around.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 February 2024
- tinkle_24Northampton, United Kingdom1,786 contributionsBeautiful and artistic building with gothic cloisters!A very historic and interesting convent established in the 15th century. Orlanda at reception was most friendly, cheery and hospitable offering very sound advice. Although a little expensive to get in, the Hispano-Moorish tiles were a sight to behold given its age. Painted wooden ceilings were decorative and beautiful. The Church was free to visit and definitely worth the climb up.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 March 2024
- Jill M160 contributionsBeautifulBeautiful, very interesting place to visit, worth the walk up the hill to get there! Tried to visit the last two years but it was closed whilst work was being done. Good to read the history and to see the beautiful exhibits. Friendly staff to guide you around. No rush at all, just a calm and peaceful place to explore.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 March 2024
- Tony McMahonLondon, United Kingdom393 contributionsA must-see for history fans in FunchalFor me, this was the high point of my visit to Funchal. I'm not a religious person but I love old churches. If you're into medieval history then this is a total must. The climb up the hill was pretty easy for me - a sixty-something - but others with mobility issues might struggle. It's a convent rich in Catholic imagery and you get to see how the nuns lived. If you're expecting Disneyland or some kind of themed experience, this will not be for you. But if you're a history fan - like myself - this is the best attraction in Funchal by a mile.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 July 2024
- DanWill8Bristol, United Kingdom28 contributionsWorth a visit and worth the entry costReally enjoyed our visit. Lots to read about the various things on display throughout the rooms. The lady at the front desk and other people throughout were very friendly. We spent about an hour but we came right at the end of the day so we weren’t blessed with time. Would recommend to anyone with an interest in history, religion or culture.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024

One star for the exercise getting there. Sadly still closed so we could not enter.
The plus was we wandered into the museum gardens just a stones throw away up the hill and enjoyed a very pleasant lunch in café situated within the grounds there.

My wife and I were met at the entrance to the convent by a very well informed lady who used to work at the nearby museum. I was sorry not to remember her name as she explained and answered all our questions so we were able to wander the convent at our own speed and notice all the items on show. The floor to ceiling tiles can be seen and they are very effective, and we were lucky as many rooms had just been reopened after renovation. We were lucky enough to receive a book on our way out which explained all the pictures and icons on display

This convent is one of the oldest monuments in Funchal still in activity. It was intended for young girls of the nobility with the luxury of the church. Visit of approximately one hour without guide. No audio guide. A shame especially considering the high entry price.

It’s a fair walk up the hill to get to this place. They are closed on some days in the week & for some hours in the middle of the day.
We arrived when they were closed but went back. They don’t take credit cards & the price is hefty.
The customer experience isn’t great.
Others seem to have enjoyed it more than us though.

This is a place to explore: lots to see, lots of history, lots of stories. Unfortunately my guide was engaged totally with her electronic gadget. She cautioned me about bumpy floors and little else, except dates.
When I suggested that our time together would be happier if she would put her gadget away she left me in the church to wander on my own, then returned to terminate the tour, without touring the church. I was in the building less thn 20 minutes, and she was electronically-engaged even as I shuffled off.
However when I asked questions she had answers, detailed and to the point. I suspect that she is knowledgable, but for her own reasons, operating on the "don't ask, don't tell" code.
So I advise not to attend Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Further if the guide has any kind of gadget, ask for another guide, come back later.
Don't let Ms Techie deprive you of this experience. Don't buy the pamphlet for 2 euro (additonal to the 2 euro tour fee).
