We didn't visit the universo but as we walked by, we sat on the terrace at the back of the museum. Nice place to sit and relax after climbing the street up.

Probably the most interesting and welcoming place we visited all week in Funchal. Lots of objects and collections to admire in very nicely decorated rooms throughout the house. Yes, it’s a little quirky and unexpected but far better than viewing a few broken pots or...More

Each room is themed and filled with countless memorabilia. Horses, ducks, ties, hats, silverware, jewelry, boxes, mugs, paintings.. You name it - it's there. Also, a lovely tea garden in the back of the house. The guide was great, told us many anecdotes about the...More

Never 've seen a museum like this! It's not actually a museum, I guess. More like a private collection of one of the more extravagant figures of Madeira. Used to be minister of culture in Madeira we've learned. The house too is very nice to...More

A hidden gem in Funchal, the entire house is filled with things that the collector has spent his entire life collecting, things of lesser and greater value. The guide gives a quite interesting view into the life of João. I appreciated this visit much more...More

Well worth a visit. Fascinating collections of one man displayed in a 19th century house which retains many of it's original features. Friendly and helpful guide. Only cost 2 euros for seniors! Finished visit with a good English brew on the sunny terrace. Highly recommend.

Yes I think so, but they only take about 20 minutes so you could have a cup of tea if you need to wait.
