- d_jones25Conwy, United Kingdom623 contributionsNot sure it’s worth the walk up the hillFirst, be warned, they don’t take credit cards & aren’t open for parts of the day/ week. The staff aren’t exactly helpful either. That said, it was quite interesting but not sure it’s worth the steep walk to get there.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 November 2023
- Tour19499719 contributionsI will always want to return to this beautiful Quinta and its gardensI found this by accident three years ago. It’s another little gem of a place, close to the English church, where you can enjoy the peace of a small but beautiful garden overlooking the city of Funchal, as well as looking at the treasures of this important Quinta. A great place to chill and maybe have a light lunch, or just a coffee or glass of wine.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 December 2023

Lady in there served us but didn’t let up her phone call in the process! 3 euro entrance. No photography no memory! Interesting number of photos on this site considering no photography inside was allowed. Grounds ok and free with access to the nice café, both open all day (museum closes for lunch) Visit the convent while in the area, its more than double the price of here at 10 euro (senior 5) but very ornate.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2024
- Michael KStockport, United Kingdom360 contributionsA bit underwhelmingWe were a bit surprised when none of the taxi drivers at the rank on Av. Do Mar seemed to know where we meant when we asked to be taken here, but I gather the Museum isn’t in the top flight of Funchal attractions. However one of them eventually realised where we wanted and took us. The gardens are untidy and the archaeological pieces nothing special, however they are free. The museum, in an old mansion, is €3 but more interesting with various rooms with furniture from different eras and we had no issues when taking photos. The artwork isn’t exactly top drawer stuff though. Personally I found the church at the convent across the road more noteworthy with a spectacular fully tiled interior. It’s free to enter, though the convent itself is €10 so we didn’t bother with that. Easy downhill walk back into town.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2024

Free for students and 1.5 euros per adult at the moment because there is work on the 1st floor.
If you have seen Casa Museu Frederico de Freitas before you will be disappointed.
It's without charm, less well maintained
To choose to only visit the Museu Frederico
There are sheets in French that you will find in certain rooms.
The garden is quiet but poorly maintained, the view is pretty
Beautiful view of the convent bell tower.
But it’s far from being a must-have

Interesting mansion set in relaxing gardens. The visit of the gardens is free of charge.
Just relaxing, for spectacular gardens go to Monte Palacio Gardens. The interest is inside, in the cool rooms decorated with elegant furniture, paintings and fine objects. And you can take pictures, which is not the case in other quintas in Funchal.

This is in the hills above Funchal harbour.
It is free to go into gardens and cafe. Pay 3 euros each to go into house which is definitely worth it.
The gardens are beautiful with colourful flowers and trees. (Note orchids not so good - go to Jardins da Boa Vista for orchids).
Some ancient architectural pieces - they are numbered so ask at reception for paper with explanation of what they are. The huge windows set in the gardens are wonderful.
There is plenty of seating to sit in the sun or shade.
The house has excellent collection of Chippendale furniture, paintings and much much more. Do not miss the basement area which has a huge collection of silver.
The cafe is lovely - seating looking down over the harbour. Indoor and outdoor seating. It is a bar, cafe, restaurant but not open in the evenings. They do afternoon tea. We just had drinks which were lovely with good service. Menu looked very good.
All in all, a great place to go for half a day or more.

Fabulous 18th Century villa with large rooms tastefully furnished with Chippendale style furniture, beautiful candelabras, silver collection, jewellery and paintings. Massive collection of minute cameos. The chapel although only small has a tranquil atmosphere and worth visiting within the garden. Impressive Dragon Tree close by the orchid collection.

The furniture in the museum is beautiful but the highlight is the amazing collection of silver and gold in the treasury towards the end of your walk around the museum. Worth the EUR 3 entry. When we went there were only a few other people there so it really is a hidden gem.
There's also a nice small cafe there for refreshment. Do this and then, as you’ll have had a bit of a rest, you could walk up to the Sao Joao do Pico Fortress. The view from there is amazing.
