- TriciaBishopBradford, United Kingdom1,686 contributionsA lovely change of sceneryWe visited Monte as a change of scenery having thoroughly explored all of Funchal. We opted to catch the local number 48 bus from the Lido stop as this is only €2 each and a lovely scenic journey taking about 30 minutes. Beside the palace gardens there are some nice public gardens and the church of Our Lady at the top offers some amazing views. The toboggan rides are a spectacle to watch but the queue for them was beyond belief and didn't appeal to us. We walked most of the way back down to Funcal before hopping on a bus lower down. Well worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 September 2023
- Sue ANewport, United Kingdom87 contributionsBeautiful GardensFound these gardens after getting off the cable car thought they were the botanical gardens and we thought these were better. So much to see gardens, palaces minerals statues . Wear comfortable shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking, and most of it up and down hills. There is a lovely old car that for 5 euros it brings you back to the top of the hill best money spent.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 September 2023
- James ECardiff, United Kingdom444 contributionsShort walk from cruise port & cable car up - Easy :-)Visited with family, including 3 children 6,3 & 2. Spent about a bit of time in the cafe to start which was fantastic. Great drinks, cake and ice-cream. Then we walked around the gardens for about 1-2hrs before heading back down to Funchal. I could have walked around for 4-5hours so if you get the chance, allow more time than you think. These gardens are on a hill so you will start at the top and work your way down on some cool and interesting paths, but then have to walk back up. For the average person walking back up is absolutely fine. There are electric cars which will shuttle people up for a small fee. Entrance is 2min walk from cable car station on top of the hill and it costs 12.50 Euro to enter, and when you enter you will see that the money is going straight back into the gardens to keep it so nice!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 October 2023
- jharrop19452 contributionsSo glad I visited it , peaceful and very beautifulA feast for the eyes , a gardeners paradise , so much to see and feel . Seeing plants that I could only dream about cultivating . A credit to the gardeners who keep it absolutely pristine . Lots of facilities for a snack and drinks and most importantly toilets scattered about the gardens which are clean and well maintained . Good trainers are essential ,the terrain is not suitable for flip flops or light sandals .Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- SimonEdgware, United Kingdom39 contributionsOne of the best gardens we have visited anywhereThis is a must on your visit to Madeira. We took the cable car from Funchal. The gardens an exhibits are superb. Spend time walking around all the different areas and the exhibits and don’t miss anything. Well worth the entrance fee and a great way to spend at least 2-3 hoursVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- jipet69Wolverhampton, United Kingdom199 contributionsSuperbThese gardens are spectacular. We went up in the cable car, with intention to visit the gardens and thought we would be there for 30-60 minutes. How wrong could we be! There is so much to see. Cafe on route and plenty of toilets along the way. The routes are very steep but there is a car that will take you back to the top for €5 each. Sculptures, mineral displays, statues, plants, trees, flamingos, you name it they have it there. Well worth the entrance fee and probably the highlight of our trip to funchal.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023

It's well spread out and never felt crowded . Lots of photo opportunities. We visited the onsite cafe before we left, the staff were lovely as was the sandwiches and cakes we ate. Even if your not into gardening yoy can enjoy this place. We really enjoyed it .Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- RoverPInverness, United Kingdom779 contributionsSuperbSuperb and varied gardens. Lots to see at any time of the year. You need to have reasonable mobility if you are going to fully explore the gardens as the gardens are constructed on a hillside. There is a spot at the bottom West corner where can look over the wall and get a great view of folk coming down on the toboggans at speed.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- Yoong90 contributionsA Madeira must visit! The cable car ride was magical. Seeing Funchal in a nutshell and ocean liners in its dock. The garden was indeed a gardeners delight if you love subtropical plants. Xmas poinsettia in a tiny pot is grown like a tree. So much to see and a ride in an vintage car is a must especially you have dodgy knees like mine. All in awesome!!!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 November 2023

Having first visited the Botanic Gardens, which was pretty much as you'd expect a botanic garden to be (and none the worse for it), we were completely unprepared for this garden.
It reminded me of Portmeirion in Gwynedd, North Wales - the same mad flights of fancy, but this garden has a Japanese twist instead of the Italianate feel of Portmeirion.
We visited at the end of February, so there were very few flowers in bloom, but that didn't matter in the slightest - everywhere you looked was a view, lush greenery, a piece of sculpture or art, and ponds containing huge koi carp.
We absolutely loved it, and thought it was worth every penny of the 12.50 euro entrance fee.

I always visit the Monte Palace Gardens when I visit Madeira. I love the African masks and sculptures exhibition and the Mineral exhibition takes my breath away and makes me very emotional.
The Garden its self is captivating and packed with wonderful things to see.
The Gardens are on a very steep slope but if you don't fancy climbing back up you can take a buggy for 2.50 euros. Don't visit Funchal without visiting this wonderful place.

Even if there were a lot of people, gardens are so large that you can enjoy your stroll on your own pace and wander around enjoying the fresh air and beautifully kept garden and art pieces. Two coffee shops. If feel tired or just for fun, you take a golf-cart back to the main gate for 2,5 € per person.

We took the gondola lift to Monte. Wonderful views if you are not afraid of heights. Otherwise there is a local bus that goes up there. It takes about an hour and you see a lot of the city on the way.
The Palace Garden is beautiful, lots of interest, a nice cafe and nice toilets in different parts of the garden. We found one behind a small waterfall. Very useful!
The terrain is steep, but if it gets too much walking up, you can call a driver and for euro 2,50 they will drive you up to the entrance.
There are 40 tile panels picturing Portuguese history. There is a museum with African stone sculptures, a display of about 700 different minerals, tiles form the 15th to 20th centuary, niches and arches dottet around the garden and a large japanese garden. The lake and surroundings are spectacular as is the view from there.
We spent a couple of hours there and finished with coffee and homemade cake at the cafe at the top.
I highly recomend this garden. If you only have time for one garden, take this one and not the botanical garden.

Magnificent gardens. We took the cable car from the old town up to these gardens. The ride takes about 15 minutes and costs 16 euros for a return ticket. However, you can go by car as there is a decent free car park.
The gardens are magnificent and we spent almost 3 hours wandering around. We loved the African statues and masks .
The gardens are attractively set out and well maintained. As we were there in January there were very few people about and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I would highly recommend these gardens to all nature lovers.
The entrance ticket costs 12 and a half euros per adult.
There is a coffee shop where we had one of the best and strongest coffees ever !!!

We had passed these gardens on our way, by cable car, to the Madeira Botanical Gardens. We didn’t realise they were so extensive and rather different from the Madeira Gardens.
We went up by bus, which is very inexpensive. However, when we wanted to make the return journey we found there wasn’t an easy bus service and we took a taxi instead.
The gardens are very extensive and interesting, if rather tiring as the visit involves quite a climb down and (more significantly) up again to the entrance. They are rather different from the other botanical gardens. There is water everywhere in them - lots of ponds, streams etc. The koi carp are great, and the noisy frogs. The gardens are divided up mainly as representing the plants of different regions of the world. There are extensive japanese structures as well as plants.
The museums deserve mention too - a large mineral museum and a huge collection of Zimbabwean sculpture. Both are somewhat specialist interest but impressive. The ticket price also includes a tasting of Madeira wine. I’m not sure this is very useful, but there is a good café in the gardens. The gardens are well served with toilets.
It is obvious that the organisation which owns the gardens has invested hugely in them, and is maintaining them very well. The level of ongoing maintenance of the plants is quite impressive. Altogether we enjoyed spending a couple of hours in the gardens. We could have spent twice as much time if we had arrived earlier in the day. The entry price is not cheap, but as a once-off we were not too unhappy with it.

A must visit destination, although you need to be fit and mobile to cope with the steps and steep gradients. The effort is well worth it, as the gardens are truly spectacular. Would recommend taking a 31 bus to the Botanical Gardens (€1.95) then buying a combined entry ticket plus both cable cars (Botanical to Monte and then Monte to Funchal (€28). Once you get to Monte, you need to pay your entrance fee (€12.50). The gardens combine terrific layout with works of art and are really well laid out and signposted. You should also witness the remarkable wooden toboggans that set off just outside the gardens (huge queues…), and a climb up to the Monte church is also worthwhile. There are good cafes at both gardens. Makes for a full day out!

We visited here in the late afternoon when it was quieter. I imagine it could get quite busy at times and some of the paths are quite narrow.
Whilst there was no queues, it took about 20/25 minutes to sort our tickets out. We paid using contactless on our iPhone. Even though we had confirmation that the payment had gone through, the cashier was insistent it hadn’t and said we needed to pay again. Reluctantly, after a discussion, we agreed as we wanted to see the gardens and had wasted enough time already. Sure enough, it transpired that we had been charged twice and ended up spending ages trying to sort out a refund.
The gardens are lovely and are definitely worth a visit. There is also a small museum with gems/rocks etc. There are quite a few steep steps, although I spotted a golf buggy taking people round, which would be advisable if you have mobility issues for example. We only spent an hour or so here, but we could have done with longer.
When we visited, the gardens closed at 6pm, although the last cable car back down to Funchal was at 5.30pm.
I’d definitely recommend a visit here, but allow yourself half a day or so.

So easy - take the cable car. Enjoy the views. Cross the road and walk around in the beautifully-kept gardens. Don’t miss the exhibitions - kids will love the carved animals and faces from Zimbabwe.
€12.50 per adult seemed a lot but there’s an incredible amount of work that goes into maintaining the gardens and pools. We didn’t come at the right time of year for all the glorious colours but the foliage and tranquility was lovely.

We rated this as one of the must do sites on the island. It is easy to reach either by various buses or, preferably, by cable car that departs from the waterfront. The garden entrance is opposite the upper cable car station, is located at the top of the large garden that stretches down a valley. It offers plenty of differing sections, walkways and views. On idea would be to journey down one side and slowly return on the other giving time to see each of the specialist gardens. Allow three hours for this. There is an exhibition area inside the buildings near the entrance, currently displaying sculptures from Zimbabwe.
If you proceed past the entrance you will approach the Monte Church and the start of the basket toboggan run which offers an exhilarating alternative descent to the cable car.

Is it easy to find your way around or do they give you a map at the entrance.
Written 30 January 2020
Yes very easy. You get a map when you buy your ticket. Also lots of places to sit and enjoy the views. But do allow at least 2-3 hours if you can. Not a place to rush around.

Is it possible to get a taxi back to Funchal from the gardens (is there a taxi rank)? Or is it better to pre book?
Written 16 August 2019
There are lots of taxis. But the most coat effective way is the public bus. (20€ compared to 1.95€ each)

Who did you book with and is it necessary to book in advance?
Written 22 June 2019
There's no need to book. Just turn up at the Ticket Kiosk at the main entrance. There's loads of room for everyone! Enjoy. Mondavi 56
