Lovely gardens. Shame about the birds

There were many small and dirty cages with exotic birds in them. I would much prefer to see them flying freely in a dome for instance

Not sure what to expect but gardens are large and quite pleasant to walk around. Entry fee is quite steep and some areas of gardens were closed. Some plants named but the ones we were interested in were not. Not as much colour as expected but it was only February

Was looking forward to this outing. I expected to enjoy some beautiful colours in a variety of flowers. Unfortunately there were hardly any yet where we stayed in Madeira, the garden was beautiful . I have been told we should have gone to the second garden which was higher up ...would like some clarification for our next visit!! the Municipal... More

We visited the gardens 4 years ago in March and we were very impressed with them and they seemed very colorful. But this time were disappointed there seemed less plants and very little colour. A tip about getting there use the local bus it a lot cheaper than the cable car I think its the No31 which stops outside.

Lovely gardens, not quite in bloom yet, still lots to see. Taking the cable car ride to them you get to appreciate even more views. Bus also runs direct to them. Not as varied as the Tropical Gardens, so if you only have time to visit one I would give these a miss. Lovely place.

Any person remotely interested in plants or indeed birds must visit the botanical gardens in Funchal. For a few euros (3 I think) you can see white peacocks and all kinds of tropical birds and plants. The cactus garden is awesome.

I have visited many botanical gardens, this one is OK but certainly not the best. Fairly small, blank unplanted areas, flower displays were lacking. I would say it was worth a visit if you are in Funchal but don't expect too much.

Loved my trip to this garden, lovely plants, peaceful area, nice wandering round listening to the birds chirping away.

We had a wonderful day at the Jardim Botanico. There were many flowers in bloom, plenty of interesting garden features. The cafe was modern and very nice and rounded off an exhaustive walk around. You could easily spend the whole day here and not be bored, if you are a garden lover.
