Just on the outskirts of Funchal the gardens are excellent value and well worth a visit. Just inside by the entrance there is a very interesting museum full of specimens representing Madeira wildlife and geology. Lots of pickled animals in jars! The gardens themselves are well organised and contain plants from all around the world as well as the specialist... More

We visited based on tickets sold at the lower cable car station and tour books. Had we known it was in such a poor state of repair after the recent fires and the Parrot enclosure was permanently closed we would not have taken the additional cable car to visit the area.

Visited twice great to wander and enjoy the atmosphere not for the faint hearted as steep paths but amazing flowers and smells.

Whay a shame they failed to inform us that the avery is closed to the public. We couldn't access the natural history museum either. In parts the gardens were awe inspiring ( mainly the garden of cacti ) but for the most part the visit was distinctly average.

Well worth a visit. Not a vast place- can do in an hour and half easily. Cost was $5.50 per adult and only $2 per child. The views of the city are amazing. You can take two cable cars from Funchal up to it- (which would include a walk as well)- but is expensive. If your main destination is the garden... More

Possibly the best garden my wife and I have visited. We love gardens and must have visited hundreds around the world.

Due to Madeira's tropical climate, there are trees and flowers from all over the world in these wonderful gardens,I particularly loved the formal flower beds, they were spectacular. I only wished we had more time. You really need half a day to take it all in.

Chose to go to these gardens over the Monte tropical. Enjoyed it to an extent but was sorry to see how fire had obviously damaged areas so there was quite new planting which made it look less mature and interesting. Hopefully it will get better over time. Not very safe for children or people with mobility problems.
