This is a great central market. Go early in the day as they begin to close up in the early afternoon. They had an amazing array of fruits that I'd never seen before. Lots of fruits typical to this island. Also a good place to...More

We like to visit the local markets wherever we go for holidays with my wife! It’s worth a visit, but be very careful with your money! The exotic fruit shop for example they put in our bag rotten fruits to make it heavier and charge...More

We nearly walked past the market, but I wanted to show my fiancée the pained tiles in the entrance so we went in The fruit stalls in there are just incredible - the first one we went to was amazing - they insisted we try...More

An interesting market with beautiful displays. Be warned about the fruit selling scam. You are offered a taste of all different fruits on the back of your hand. If you choose to buy fruit, they put different fruit to that selected in a plastic bag...More

Fruit sellers stop you as you are walking past, to give you a taste of their fruit, then they charge you a hyper-inflated price for a few rotten bananas & complain if you don’t want to buy. Just horrible

I love markets. They’re full of locals and have local food. This one is open daily. Huge fish market on basement floor. Fruit and veg on first floor. You can taste and try all kinds of exotic things. One of the few things I would...More

If you arrive by cruise ship you won’t have the choice but if you staying in Maderia visit the market on a Friday. Prices are cheaper and the selection vast since all the local producers get free stalls for one day a week. Excellent fish,...More

The market is a great place to wander through and bargains can be had but just be careful when you’re offered a taste of fruit, veg or sweets as they will expect you to buy and it can be more expensive than you’re expecting!

No. Nearby are many restaurants in a re developed part of old Funchal. You will find plenty of choice along the narrow street that runs up to the fort at Santa Maria.
