We have been to Funchal four times and each time the Cathedral Se is closed. It is however worth a walk to as the area around is great for street restaurants.

Visit the cathedral at Funchal - beautiful inside, but closed between 12 and 3 p.m each day and not open to visitors during services.

The cathedral is very plain except for a beautiful Gothic style portal. The interior is quite ornate with beautiful altars, lovely statues and cedar wood ceiling. It is fairly dark inside due to very small windows. Visiting hours are limited so check before you plan...More

This cathedral has a very impressive interior, but it is a shame to find that its beauty is hidden by the lack of light within. It has a wonderful ceiling and many of the statues are emotive. It has limited visiting hours and is probably...More

A relatively simple and austere building with an interesting intricate ceiling. Has limited opening times.

The cathedral is closed between 12.00 and 15.00 so we needed to return at a different time. Unfortunately a mass was in progress so we were not able to explore in detail. It was not a particularly spectacular building although the mass was well attended.

Went to mass here and was a wonderful experience, a few words in English for the tourists was a nice touch.

This small but lovely Cathedral is located right in the centre of Funchal. Although not a grand size, it was prominent enough to be a useful landmark for me during my first day in Funchal. I thought the interior was peaceful and beautiful; I’ve visited...More
