Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You will find this church when you return to the street after your visit of the “Fortress of São Tiago” and you go to the end of the Old Town by the narrow street next the fortress. It is located on the left side of the street end seems very simple on the outside, but you will be surprised by the simple beauty on the inside.
The church is from the 18th century and in the “Baroc Style”, and it seems that the doors are still in the original state from that time, it seems that the inside has been well demodulated with the time passing, but anyhow it is nice to see the inside and certainly the blue Portuguese Tiles, better known under the Portuguese name “Azulejos”. Leaving here means that you have seen the end of the Old town of Funchal.

Igreja do Socorro is a church with breathtaking architecture and a beautiful position on top of a hill overlooking the sea. Just a 5 minute walk from Funchal, it is quiet, peaceful and a very reflective space. Well worth a visit.

A beautiful church that sits up on top of a small hill. It's a short walk up from the Fort. We were glad it was open so we could go inside and see the beautiful altars and statues that are all around. The architecture is beautiful for a church that was originally built by the town in the 1500's. It is a very quiet place to visit.

Situated just outside the tourist trail of the old town, it sits high, perched above the fort.
The blue tiling on either side of the altar is quite unusual and the painted ceiling is stunning
We were fortunate to see it set out for an afternoon wedding.

A white and black building with an onion tower when viewed from high. Inside are painted ceilings and a couple of tiled paintings. Pleasant and not too ostentatious as some baroque churches can be. Lovely views of the sea from outside the Church.

This is an attractive church , away from the tourist bustle and restaurants of Rua Santa Maria.
The stark black and white exterior is impressive and it is a big church and almost impossible to photograph with the trees.
After the bright sunshine, the inside can seem quite dark at first with the only natural light coming in through the doors, two small windows above them and the small stained glass window in the chancel. This is one of the few examples of stained glass in a Madeiran church.
The main altar takes up the whole of the east wall and the word impressive hardly describes it. It is a wonderful example of OTT baroque work. There are two smaller, but equally as good altars on either side of the chancel arch.
There is plenty else to enjoy too with the lovely picture azulejo tiles on the chancel walls and the tile baptistry at the back of the church.
