I was looking forward to tasting some Madeira wine, but this place was very disappointing. Quite a large room, with lots of barrels used as tables, We had an idea of what we were looking for, but instead of asking us about preference we were served a glass each of 3 types of wine, all younger than what we preferred. This seems very wasteful as we didn't drink them, nor where we given any information about the different types. It felt very rushed despite there being only one other couple in the place. The samples are free, but with a bit more effort they would have got a sale. Instead we went to HM Borges, where we spent €40 on a decent bottle of Madeira wine.
If you are looking for a small 37cl bottle of 5 year old wine they do sell these for about the same price as the supermarket - €7.50 For something more upmarket, visit Borges which is about 5 minutes away.

Great way to taste a range of d'Oliveira madeiria for free also had some Honey cake which was very tasty. we purchased a bottle of dry madeira and a Honey cake to take back to work. Also some sugar cane honey which is very dark for me to attempt to make honey cake for myself. They have a large range of madeira from many years - we were going to purchase one from 1953 for my husband but we could see it and it was very expensive so we decided against it.

We visited here for a Madeira tasting as part of a walking tour of Funchal with the escorted tour group. We all piled in and were seated at various tables and quickly served with small samples (in shot glasses) by a couple of young ladies. 3 different styles of Madeira, but we didn't think much of the wines. We were also served with pieces of their traditional molasses cake and we were also given information leaflets. The ladies who were serving were very gruff and unhelpful. They almost threw the cake and wines at us! We didn't buy any madeiras from here, but even if we had enjoyed the wines, we wouldn't have bought any because they were so rude. I did, however, buy a drinks coaster and something else and they then made a fuss because I wanted to pay by credit card because I didn't have any loose euros. Eventually, they shrugged their respective shoulders and made the credit card transaction .....

Not much is free in life but this was. When you enter you are seated at a table and samples of madeira are bought to your table for you to taste. The hope is that you will like at least one of the samples and buy a bottle, the Madeira wine comes with molasses cake. On show is a variety of Madeira wines some dating back over 100 years.
The ladies that serve the samples give the impression that they serve 50 customers a day for the last 20 years - they probably have! They are neither friendly or unfriendly and a bit more customer service would make the experience more pleasant.

Easy to find in Funchal town this is a great place to try the local tipple. It’s an impressive building with huge barrels and ancient bottles, we saw one dating back to 1850. Once confirmed that you are there for the tasting you are beckoned to a barrel table and the staff brought out 3 samples of Madeira wine. The medium dry and medium sweet 3 year old and a 5 year old sweet wine all served with the local Christmas style cake. There’s no pressure to buy, but many great souvenirs can be purchased. A visit here is an easy win for the wine lover.

The huge barrels are quite captivating as are the smells. Bottles from 1850 for €1800! You are greeted on arrival and given a selection of three Madeira wines to try up to 5 years old. There are plenty over 100 years you can buy. You are not required to purchase anything. It is a sight to see not withstanding the free samples! A lovely place worth a visit and there are other non alcoholic merchandise you can buy.

Superb place. The staff are really friendly and the Madeira’s were excellent. The only downside (no fault of their own) is because of brexit, they don’t ship to the UK - I’m guessing it would be too expensive. What a shame as I would have bought a mixed case of 12. Great place to try though.

Enjoyed my brief visit to the Madeira wine lodge where I tasted 3 different Madieras: dry, medium sweet and sweet. I bought a 10 year old medium sweet for around 25 euros or £23. I however in my absent mindedness left my glasses on the table I was sitting at.

Great wines and beautiful place. They were very generous with their sample tastings. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because we were there a few minutes and employee never approached us to have us sit and explain their process for sampling their wines. The woman that helped us wasn't friendly, very business like.

Great place to visit in Funchal to pick up a bottle of the eponymous Madeira wine. Free tasting is provided and the staff let the products speak for themselves. There is no hard sell of any kind here, something I appreciated. We just wandered in but this place also forms part of certain Madeira tasting tours.
