Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Be there close to the sunset, a couple of hours so you can explore several sites around you. Between 17:30 GMT to 18:00 GMT be there. If you are lucky you will feed yourself like inside the cockpit on a smooth flight. Just a few feet bellow the clouds welcome you without the movement of the aircraft, the "cockpit" is still. The sun ahead will come down slowly inside the clouds the colours will change to red, orange and almost pink, the sun will disappear and if you wait a while you will se ir reappearing briefly on the bottom of the cloud. Keep un mind you are above 4.500 feet.

We did not walk here, but we drove all over the place. It was most beautiful and very quiet, we did not see many other cars there.
The road from Encumeda was closed, but we found the way in another way and it was well worth the drive.
It is very beautiful and very different from other parts of Madeira.

There's a short, easy and very dramatic route up to Pico Ruivo's summit from the big car park at Teixeira, 3km east, where there's also an excellent new restaurant and cafe Abrigo da Heidi which serves great coffee and delicious Austrian-style cakes. Teixeira is an easy drive up mainly good roads from near Santana. The route up to the summit is almost entirely stone-paved and it's an easy and wide path with gentle gradients but some very dramatic views to both sides, particularly if the clouds are coming and going as they often do up in the mountains., and the views from the summit itself, in every direction, are truly stunning. There's even a government rest house just a few hundred metres from the summit for further refreshments if you need them, with a large sheltered terrace outside as well as seats inside. And from the summit or just below it there are also some much more challenging and rougher routes both west (to Encumeada) and south (to Pico Ariero) though both take 4-5 hours one-way and are not for the faint-hearted or those who suffer from vertigo..! A great walk and a huge pay-off for remarkably little effort

It's all about the getting to and going from. The scenery changes initially to what resembles the new forest. Odd I know. Gorse heathland with cows and cattle grids but with valleys with clouds in them. You gradually rise and the scenery changes to deep green valleys with blue seas beyond up to peaks of stone and even better views. It doesn't matter where you look, where you take a picture or video. Nothing quite captures the beauty or splendour. Lots of viewpoints but not needed. Just pull up, you won't be in the way. It changes again with hills full of wind turbines. I love them and though incongruous they work. Nothing here to do but be awed. Brilliant.

This is usually a stop on the tour of the west of the island and, cloud permitting, affords great views of the coast. I also understand that it is on a levada walk as well.

Don't miss out on climbing the Pico Ruivo (make sure you either have transport arranged or do a there-and-back-again walk), it's a fantastic viewpoint all over the island. You're above the clouds, it's sunny and the views are breathtaking. Hiking gear and UV protection is essential.

We walked a short stretch of this as part of a tour of the west. Pleasant enough, with some good views, but there are more exciting levada walks!

We stopped at the top of the mountain on our way to Rabacal. The highway up the mountain is very steep and windy. We didn’t do the hike but saw the windmills and solar panels. There are no trees only scrub bush and it was ten degrees cooler up here. Going down to Porto Muniz is a better road.

The trip is suitable for all people, there are 2 ways. You can go longer or shorter way. The longer way is not for older people, children and so on. It is quite challenging. The views are amazing. Be carefull for weather. It can be very cold there.
