Walked from the Largo Fonte bus stop (20/21) over past Monte Palace Gardens and down the steep slope to the terminal for the Botanic Garden Teleferico. Then down some more and up again to Curral dos Remeiros. Quite steep slopes and probably slippery after rain. The right fork for Levada do Bom Successo was marked as "at your own risk" so we took the left fork. At Curral the start of the Levada dosTornos was very muddy but improved after a few hundred yards. We stopped at the Jasmine Tea House and caught the bus after refreshment. A few bits of mud and a couple of clambers but fairly easy between Curral and Jasmine. Nowhere to stop and rest or picnic en route though. Have walked this before and little changed but never been past Jasmine. Despite 3 cruise ships being in we met probably less than 30 people walking in either direction.

The levada can be accessed from the path that leads down from the botanic gardens cable car. Go down the wide cobbled path and the path splits left down the hill with a forest path leading left to the levada. At the levada turn right and you'll get to a waterfall. The previous poster says this way is dangerous. To avoid this bit join the levada further on by missing the forest path, going down the cobbled path and crossing the packhorse bridge followed by a climb into the next village. It's about 6km to a tunnel under Pinheirino where you can catch a 37 bus back to funchal.

The lack of signage does make this quite a challenge. There are parts where the path is badly eroded and very narrow, but it is mostly easy walking. We got very lost and ended up walking through a long, dark tunnel which opened out onto a very dangerous path with huge holes and a waterfall, decided to turn back and found a scrubby unsigned path down to the packhorse bridge. If you get to the tunnel please do think carefully, it is not for the faint-hearted and you will need a torch and a hat. It would have been very easy to get injured and completely lost, and there is no phone signal up there. We were lucky that we had arranged for a fabulous local taxi driver to pick us up, his wife happens to be a mountain guide and advised him correctly of where we would be. All well in the end but don’t think that this is just a stroll in the sunshine.

We chose to do this walk as we were staying in Funchal and could do it without needing a taxi/bus etc and gave us an excuse to use the cable car.

We caught the cable car up to Monte, had a wander around and watched the toboggans and then headed off.

We walked to the Jasmin Tea Gardens which took about 90 minutes. Varied walking with some good views and nice scenery along the way. A few uphill bits (worst bit is at the start). Only one very tiny piece was muddy otherwise mainly very dusty.

Lunch at the Tea Garden and then walked back, or you can catch the bus (Tea Garden will tell you the bus times).

Maybe not the best levada walk but we enjoyed it and for ease when staying in Funchal it’s perfect and makes a good day out.

We took a bus up from the center to the starting point. It took a while, but we found Levadan. It was very nice and easy going (no major incline). Several nice viewpoints were along the path, and they offered a powerful view of Funchal. Afterwards we took a bus back down to Funchal - it's easier than we thought to go with the local buses. It didn't take more than the morning, so it's not a day trip.

We took the bus to Sitio das Quattro estradas for the start of this walk. We decided to start at the end of the levada ie at the opposite end to Monte. We walked all the way to the lovely Tea House, Jasmin Tea room where we caught the bus at the bottom of their drive back ino Funchal. This was about 15 mes or so. A lovely walk, starting with a desent to the levada in a wood. We then turned left and walked about 10 min to the end of the levada before re tracing our steps and heading to Monte. Great views to the sea and across several valleys. Went through a few tunnels so a torch is needed. The longest tunnel you can't go through a d so we headed up a path over the hill and down the roads on the other side back to the levada. The only tricky part of the direction finding g was fi di h the path up the hill - it is a few minutes before the blocked tunnel. Great scenery, peaceful walk and a very nice, but long levada walk.

Levada was difficult to find. Steep downhill to the Levada. Going towards Monte the way was blocked after about half a mile. We went the other direction. Beautiful views but dark tunnels and vertiginous paths. After about 5 miles reached the next village, Achada de Gaula. We were lucky enough to catch the very infrequent bus back to Camacha.

I walked the levada from Palheiro to Monte on 30/12/22 with a friend. For the most part, it was a pleasant stroll with some nice views towards the south and Funchal. A visit to the Jasmine Tea House is worth it. The owner was very pleasant and his teas and cakes were excellent. The last mile or so of the levada was more exciting/frightening (depending on the individual) as it closely follows the edge of a cliff. A warning for vertigo sufferers, the path is badly eroded for about 2 metres which meant we had to walk along the concrete edge of the levada which is no more than 15 cm wide. The decent from the levada to the cable car is a bit of a challenge for inexperienced walkers as part of it has been damaged by tree/rock falls meaning a few detours on slippery surfaces was necessary. My inexperienced friend did not enjoy that bit of the walk at all although he loved the rest of it.

What should have been a great walk beside an irrigation canal… turned out to be frightening experience. We started walking next to the levada, although there were some warning signs about parts of the trail being destroyed by floods. The trail narrowed after about 2kms, the walking part next to the canal narrowed from 1m to 50cms, to 30 cms and finally to 20 cms. This on a altitude of about 50 ms above street level, an abyss that gave me shivers to my spine. My wife and me desided to throw the towel, safely returning to the starting point in the village. I don’t know what’s the current state of the trail, maybe they rebuild the walking trail but I won’t be walking the trail again, ever!

We did this walk from Babosas, under the cable car, to the Jasmine tea house. Under normal circumstances this would have been an easy walk for me but unfortunately my knee flared up a week before my holiday & I found the start of the walk quite hard going. Once we reached the levada the going was much easier & for the most part is a lovely walk with not too many people on it. Just a shame there was some rubbish here & there along the trail.
