Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's a bit of a hike to Villa Sassetti, which one can continue up to the castle. The gardens are impressive and really peaceful.

We started at Pena Castle, walked to the Castle of the Moors and as recommended by our guest house, took the Villa Sassetti Pedestrian Footpath down to Sintra. Not realizing that Villa Sassetti was a place, we were pleasantly surprised to happen upon a clean WC on the trail which it turns out was on the edge of the Villa Sassetti grounds. We continued to find beautiful gardens and grounds. While we didn't go into any buildings, we greatly enjoyed the end of our walk. While hiking boots aren't needed, I do not recommend walking down the trail in sandals.

Recently restored to its former glory Vila Sasseti used to be a summer house of the Sasseti family.
The main attraction are the fabulous gardens and walking tracks that lead from the tone of Sintra all the way up to the castle.
The tracks are fully restored and easy to follow with plenty of signage. No tourist crowds here going up and down.
It´s the perfect way to visit Sintra's treasures without the mess of tourists all around.

We accidentally found this on the way to the Castle of the Moors, and the signs indicated that this was a way to get there, so we hiked it. It was a rainy day and we had our hiking boots on and so we were good to go. There were few others doing so, but it was a very lovely challenge with rewards along the way. Vila Sassetti and its fountain are very pretty, but the waterfalls and the journey itself are the real stars.
The few other tourists along the way all encouraged each other as we went, and it was really a solid hike. On this particular day there was low cloud cover, rain, fog, and we hiked through some mud. This day was, for me, the best day of the trip. I want to return to do this on a cool and sunny day!

Vila Sassetti is a 19th century Lombard style villa situated on the hillside between Moorish Castle and the historic city centre. The property has been a hotel and private residency and makes for an attractive building which can be viewed from the town by looking up towards the castle.
If you take the hiking trail between the castle and/or Park of Pena down to the the city centre, you'll pass Vila Sassetti. The garden grounds here are very well manicured and the villa is a delightful property to look over from the outside. Not sure if the property is open for public at times of the year or if you can only view the villa from the outside.
Note: There is a small detached cafe at Vila Sassetti if you want to stop for a cup of coffee and/or cake.

Actually discovered it on our way down a trail from Pena. Views and garden area became a pleasant surprise. The footpath itself is rather steep, so if you plan to explore the Pena Palace or Moorish Castle it may be better to take a more sloping path up and then come down the route via vila Sassetti.

We found this gem as we were hiking down the trail from Pena into Sintra central. This is quite a nice little Villa and would be a great place to have a wedding. Be sure to look for the tile work on the building and all of the plants and flowers that are in bloom.

We refused to pay the tut-tut, so we started walking up the hill to the palace. We walked by it, and it is really pretty. The walk was strenuous but manageable. But you are rewarded with a nice work-out and beautiful view going up the mountain. I was glad I did it.

This is a great way to either go up or down the mountain to visit the castle or Pena Palace. It's an easy trail that takes more or less an hour and a half each way, if you're stopping to take lots of pictures as you should. It's a trail locals like to do also, as from kids we get used to go to the castle through these trails. Enjoy!

We did not enter the Vila, but it is on the way up/down the hiking path to/from the Castle of the Moors and Pena Palace. It has a beautiful garden area that you walk through on the way to the hiking trails. Vila Sassetti has a uniquely beautiful style, and worth a stop. The grounds are a great resting point on the journey to/from the higher palaces.

Hi. Where is the closest parking near the beginning of the footpath?
Written 14 September 2018
Could we please park there .? And is there a gift shop open?
Written 19 August 2017
We came down by foot, so I don't have a direct answer, but...
In general, it is fairly difficult to park in Sintra...
Since the distence from the Villa to the end of the trail is relativly short, I would say you CAN park near the end of the trail and walk, if you find an available space.
The Villa itself is just a building we see from the outside, and the gardens around it. I did not see any gift shop in the villa, but assume you can find many of those in town.

Hello Michael!
Yes. It's open everyday from 9 am to 5pm and the entrance is for free. It close only on Christmas Day, on the New Year and maybe on Easter!
