Probably better known to locals than to tourists.
Aug. 2021
The Fonte Luminosa is very conveniently located near the Alameda metro stop. I think this beautiful park and fountain is geared more towards the locals than it is towards tourists.

The entire park area is very large - much like an elongated green carpet - and was dotted with kids, dogs, and couples. There is certainly plenty of room for everyone.

However, it’s very difficult to get an ‘uncluttered’ straight-on shot of the fountain because of all the people sitting on the rim of the fountain.

My understanding is that the fountains are fully turned on only at certain hours of the day, but I didn’t see any notice there as to specific days and times. I just wandered out there on a whim, without regard for whether the fountains would be in full operation or not. (I hesitate to suggest checking times out on Google because my experience has been that Google is wrong far more often than it’s right!)

Also, for taking pictures, pay attention to the angle of the sun. I was there at about noon and was nearly blinded by direct sunlight. By 1 pm, the situation was far better.

There’s an upper terrace to this fountain complex, which means climbing a bundle of stairs, but it’s not such an onerous task, given the beautiful purple bougainvillea lining the walls of the staircase.

View from the upper terrace is lovely and there’s plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the view.

Spectacular

We had to wait till 11am until the water was turned on, but it was worth waiting for. It takes quite a few minutes for the different sections to fill with water, but the end result is spectacular

It’s a massive fountain
Dec. 2018
It’s a really powerful fountain that if it was located in city would be a major tourist attraction, it really is up there with Trevi fountain for being spectacular.

The power of the water coming down from the top is just as impressive as the features in the waterfall,

If in area check it out you will not be disappointed.

Impressive to say the least

The Fonte Luminosa is worth the visit despite being a bit further away from the city centre. Combine it with a visit to the mercado do arroios and you want be disappointed. One note though, the fountain eta shut down during early afternoon so try a morning visit or after 18.00!

Sit down as you view the fountain

Try to go up to the top. Plenty of cafes and.restaurants around. Bus from Martim Moniz is available. 706. Pay only 1.85 one way. There is also a metro station here. Bring umbrella is you think it might rain as the place is huge and.if it rains it is not easy to run to the nearest shade.
