This church was damaged by fire during earthquake in the 1700's. Despite this it is very beautiful and peaceful to visit.

It was the "different" about this church that put it on my list. It didn't disappoint. You definitely feel different inside this place. Maybe it's seeing the scars or maybe it instills resiliency. What's real and what's legend?

It's just near the Rossio and so a must do. It's amazing that you have this fusion of ancient pillars and artistically incorporated new walls after the devastation of earthquake and fire. A wonderful place to spend a few minutes to appreciate both the architecture...More

Beautiful church that burned down and wasn't totally renovated. They have just rebuild the ceiling with the pink marble and fire marks can be seen on the columns and walls. It's good to have a guide to be able to find out more about its...More

The church is located in the center of Lisbon and from the exterior, one would expect to find an ornate interior. However, this church was the survivor of several disasters throughout Lisbon's history, and the interior shows that. The interior is essentially burnt and destroyed...More

A church with her dark history, nice architecture, a special style; it was the wedding church from the royals; still and dark impression, damaged by earthquakes and a fire, but - surviving all difficults, and never surrender.

Perhaps this should be known as Murphy’s Law church☺ Barely surviving the 1531 and 1755 major earthquakes and subsequent tsunami that destroyed much of the Baixa district, the massive stone pillars were scorched in a devastating fire—the latest in 1959. The faint stench of smoke...More

The historical significance of this church and the surrounding plaza is little known to the average tourist. The plaza with its star of David monument pays tribute to the Jews who were slaughtered during and shortly after the inquisition. The church itself was gutted by...More

We had a chance to attend a mass inside this church strongly damaged by a fire. It is interesting how things work out in it despite its limitations.

When walking through Lisbon, certainly stop at this church and see the impact of the fire and how that changes the mood in the church. 5 minutes will suffice, but at least take a look.

A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site,
Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply
"Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake
construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755
earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its
name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in
Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the
Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the
