The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

The statue of Fernando Pessoa is situated right in front of the Cafe A Brasileira, on Rua Garrett. Its author is the sculptor from Lisbon Antonio Augusto Lagoa Henriques. We see an eminent writer sitting at a table in Brasileir's cafe, in his second home, where he usually wrote.Rua Garrett was once the intellectual landmark of the city, now concentrating many shops, old bookstores and important cafes. Fernando Pessoa is without a doubt one of the greatest Portuguese names. Here you can take pictures with the statue as well as enjoy a coffee in one of the symbols of Lisbon.

A monument to a great Man

Escultura de Fernando Pessoa is a lovely tribute to a great man of Letters. This Portuguese literary figure was a writer and a philosopher, but also a literary critic. He also translated from English and French, languages in which he also wrote. This bronze statue pays homage to Pessoa as he frequented A Brasileira coffee house, in front of which the statue is situated. Next to the sitting Pessoa is an empty chair for the use of tourists who wish to take a photo snap with the great Man!

A Lovely Sculpture

We came across this lovely sculpture whilst walking around the streets on our curiosity trip in Lisbon - a well made sculpture it is too and well worth a look

Interesting statue of a poet

The statue of Portugal's famous poet Fernando Pessoa situated in Chidao Area is a must visit attraction in Lisbon. whenever we are in Lisbon we go to take a picture with this bronze statue of the famous writer.

This sculpture stands in tribute to Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese poet and writer considered one of the most significant literary figures of the Portuguese language.

The monument is a larger than life bronze sculpture of Pessoa depicted seated having his regular morning coffee on this same street. There's an extra seat as part of the sculpture for the great many tourists and locals who like to have their selfie taken with the writer.

Worth a visit and spend time here

According to portuguese, their most famous poet drank a coffee every day here and then he left for his work. I drank a coffee here and really enjoyed the whole experience.

This is a statue of one of Portugal's greatest poets, it is also one of the most photographed items in Lisbon. People queue to have their picture with this statue.

This is a very interesting statue in that it makes you feel you want to take that open seat right next to him. Many do as a matter of fact. Fernando Pessoa is one of Portugals most celebrated poets. It sits right off Chiado square in front of Cafe Brasileira. Another interesting statue is that of Antonio Ribeiro which stands close by. Also this statue is surrounded by intricate designs in the pavement. The square is surrounded by many shops and restaurants.

This is the famous local writer. The sculpture is beautiful. You can take picture with him . There are food outlets.

I Know Not What Tomorrow Will Bring

'I know not what tomorrow will bring', were the last words ever written by Fernando Pessoa, who wrote them in his hospital bed before he died at the age of 47. A BBC World Service documentary on him I listened to some years ago stated that he will one day be recognised as the greatest writer of the 20th century. Praise indeed. The statue to him is located in Chiado outside 'A Brasileira' café. It's a lovely statue of him seated on a chair and there is an empty chair alongside for people to sit on and have their photographs taken. A 'must see' when visiting the Chiado district of Lisbon.
