About
This suspension bridge across the Tagus River has the longest central span in Europe, at 1.5 miles. It also looks quite a bit like San Francisco's famed "Golden Gate Bridge," though this one was named after the revolution.

    Like the Golden Gate Bridge!
it is astounding in its span and beauty, and we love it as it looks like our Golden Gate Bridge at home. Spans the wide river carrying a lot of cars, buses, and also train service between Lisbon and the suburbs and towns to the south. And we see it from underneath where there is a lot of riverfront development. The big bridge casts a shadow and sends some traffic and train noise down to us.

    A handsome bridge.
We loved visiting the 25th April Bridge, you literally could be in San Francisco except this one is named after the date of Portugal’s revolution. It was so windy when we went in December, we could barely stand up. We have walked across the Golden Gate Bridge and wanted to do this one too but pedestrians are not allowed unfortunately, it’s cars and trains only. You get some lovely sunsets in Lisbon featuring the bridge as the sun sets behind it from certain viewpoints in the city. As bridges go, it’s right up there.

    Must see
There is so many photos, so many opinions about this bridge. There is nothing but add "that's true". Bridge is big, red, stunning and loud. Unfortunately available only on highway or by train. But there is so many oppotunities to take a photo.

Spanning the Tagus River, this suspension bridge was inaugurated in 1966 as the Salazar Bridge. Originally named for then Prime Minister Antonio Salazar, it was later renamed in 1977 to the 25th of April Bridge in honor of the revolution that overthrew Salazar’s dictatorship. The bridge managed to find its way into many of my photos. The best view is from the top of the Christo Rei statue (driving here means you’ll get to ride across the bridge too). We were surprised to get a glimpse of the bridge (and the Christo Rei monument) from our plane window when we flew into Lisbon. Note that traffic can get backed up around the bridge, especially during rush hour.

This two-level road-rail suspension bridge over the Tagus connects Lisbon's Alcantara district on the north shore with the city of Almada on the south shore. It was built as a road bridge in 1962–1966. It was put into operation in November 1966. The suspension elements of the bridge cover a section of over 2 km located at a height of over 70 m above the waters of the Tagus. The total width of the bridge is 30 m and the height of the pylons holding the ropes is 190 m. The bridge is modeled on the Golden Gate structure in San Francisco. Definitely one of the prettiest bridges in Portugal.

The iconic 25 de Abril Bridge, a lengthy and impressive suspension masterpiece, gracefully spans the Tagus River. It is beauty and efficiency combined, having dual tiers cater to both cars and trains.

It links both sides of the Tagus river, and its reddish hue is reminiscent of the Golden Gate bridge. The bridge stands out against the river's blue backdrop. Taking a bus ride offers a unique perspective, allowing you to enjoy river vistas while transiting across the bridge. I also observed the same bridge from a ferry crossing, which provides another angle to appreciate this grand structure. From wherever you look at it, the bridge, plus the river, plus the sailing boats make a good and relaxing backdrop for leisure time by the river bank or for framing a magnificent background for a magnificent photo memory of a Lisbon holiday.

Almost from everywhere in Lisbon, you will be able to see the iconic "Ponte 25 de Abril". It connects Lisbon to the town of Almada, on the left bank of the Tagus River. As a suspension bridge, it has two decks, the upper one has six lanes for traffic in general and the lower carries a double railway track, on a lenght of 2.277 meters. It is a beautiful bridge, named after the date of the Portuguese "Carnation Revolution" and is indeed a Lisbon's postcard. And remember, it is not a bridge for pedestrians. Enjoy!

The bridge is magnificent but the bridge experience/visitor centre was disappointing. The elevator was not working. We could have climbed the 300+ steps to the viewpoint but decided not to. Information on the bridge construction is detailed on iron plates outside. Very difficult to read and it was windy & raining when we visited. Not much to see inside. There's one room in the centre of which under a glass table top is a model of the bridge. Round the table there's a timeline/hisory of it's construction.

This suspension bridge over the river must certainly be counted, together with the statue of Cristo Rei which stands near its point of arrival on the southern bank of the Tagus, among the symbols of the city, given that it appears forcefully in all the panoramas facing the estuary of the river. It is very reminiscent of the similar, older, taller and slightly longer Golden Gate in San Francisco. Built in 1966, it was initially reserved only for the transit of cars; in 1999 an underlying level for rail transit was also added. 2200 meters long, it has a suspended central span of 1013 metres. It is certainly an imposing and fascinating structure, but it cannot be explored on foot; the only way to get close to the route is obviously to travel along it by car or on board a train, or to take advantage of the climb to the seventh pylon (outside the river, on the right orographic side), from whose panoramic terrace you can also see a glimpse of the road plan (in this regard see the specific review of the "Experience Pilar 7 - Ponte 25 de Abril").

One of the great landmarks of Lisbon. Unfortunately, you can't cross the bridge on foot. It's worth taking a river cruise so you can see this impressive iron construction up close
ambience: impressive
recommendable: there's no way around it

We've crossed this big bridge by train, walked under it several times, traveled under by train and car, but the best way to see it was by sailboat on the river. It is very high up and noisy because of the train traffic. Looks very much like the Golden Gate Bridge in California.

the bridge really adds something to the city. would have liked to have crossed it but sadly didn't on this visit. on the day we were near it, traffic on it looked very slow. i think you can cross it by train so will do that next time we visit the beautiful city.
