Ermida de caracterÃsticas rurais, construÃda com pedras acumuladas na base das cruzes existentes num cemitério, localizado fora das muralhas, e que por um costume religioso eram lançadas pelos caminhantes invocando as almas e dizendo "seja por um Fiel de Deus". Foi assim construida esta ermida, dedicada à s almas do Purgatório, em 1551, por Afonso Braz, tal como pode ler-se na lápide existente do lado esquerdo da entrada. Serviu de apoio e asilo à s crianças desvalidas. Em 1690, por iniciativa do Padre Gil Lourenço, foi construÃda a capela, com um altar em talha dourada e paredes revestidas de silhares de azulejos, representando a Vida da Virgem, acima dos quais foram colocados quadros a óleo de Bento Coelho. O terramoto de 1755 destruiu parcialmente a ermida.
