The area
Neighbourhood: Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

A neighborhood of Lisbon that dates back to the 1700's. Very lively at night with shops and restaurants open. This is also where you find Livraria Bertrand and Café A Brasileira.

We stayed at the periphery of the Chiado district and enjoyed walking around the narrow streets and the shopping streets. Lots of stores, including high end ones, bars and restaurants, antique stores, book stores and second hand book stores. There is an upscale shopping center - Amazens Chiado - with about 50 shops and a large FNAC store, the Santa Justa lift. Praca do Comercio is on the southern side. Two of the best if not THE best restaurants of Lisbon - Alma and Belcanto - are also in this area.

This section of Lisbon seemed pretty upscale, with lots of restaurants, cafes, and shopping. It seems pretty modern relative to other areas of Lisbon we saw. It has a multistory shopping mall. It's a nice place to walk around. We ate dinner at one of the restaurants. The Carmo Convent and Santa Justa Lift overlook the area, and the Praca do Comercio is on the southern side.

I stayed in Chiado during a resent trip to Lisbon. Its quieter than Lisbon proper, historic and beautiful. I was traveling alone and felt perfectly safe. Chiado was a great find!

There are bad smelling buskers here. There are people on high. The things that are contraband in other countries are consumed by so many people in this square.

Chiado is an area situated on a hill overlooking the lower town, to the west of Baixa. The name Chiado comes from the small square Largo do Chiado. Chiado is an important cultural and commercial district, known for its luxury shopping, historic landmarks, and its numerous theatres and museums. The present shape of the district and the multitude of impressive religious buildings are the result of Ferdinand I's decision in the 14th century. There are two interesting baroque churches in the area, Igreja do Loreto and Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao and the ruins of the Igreja do Carmo church that was destroyed in the earthquake. The walls of the building have survived, but the entire roof has collapsed. Inside there is an archaeological museum. Of course, a must-see is Cafe A Brasileira, one of the oldest cafes, which in the past century was a meeting place for intellectuals, artists, writers and free thinkers. This is a must-see area of the city while in Lisbon.

This is regarded as one of the hippest or trendiest parts of town, although I am not quite sure what means! All I do know is that it is a great area for wandering around, soaking up the atmosphere and people and window watching.
