Chiado is at the heart of the Lisbon culture and shopping experience. You will have plenty of options with so many attractions near by. A must.

Our hotel was in this lively area - easy access to the rest of the city. Shops, cafes, bars - need anything else???

We visited in a fierce rainstorm so this was more about haste and refuge than expansive dawdling. Church of St Roch is surprising and magnificent (and dry). The museum attached definitely dry. A few restaurants and bars have local character and seem appealing. Some quirky shops with interesting arty stuff and cork (who heard of cork umbrellas?). Its a few... More

This is our favourite part of the city, it is all happening, many top end shops, restaurants and hotels. It is nice just to walk around taking it all in, the area has a real vibe about it

We were in Chiado on Black Friday. There were several people out and about and it was very orderly. My sister and son found lots of good buys on clothes and shoes. I bought one of the most beautiful purses. It's was one of our favorite stops during our Lisbon visit!

Whether you are Brazilian or not, it may not make any difference, Chiado is the charming neighborhood that conquers you on your first visit. You'll want to do everything there. And always come up with another reason to come back. Go there, stay there, be in love there!

A nice neighborhood. THE place locals frequent for shopping and dining. Full of beautiful houses, modern shops and posh restaurants. Fairly steep streets (Garret) and many "hidden" places.

We stayed there for our Lisbon visit near metro Rossio in Avenida Palace. Probably the most convenient place to stay. It is all walkable and compact without the need to climb hills.

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
