Tiles are a key part of Portuguese cultural identity. This museum shows a unique collection of tiles spanning more than 8 centuries, which allows the visitors to witness the evolution of tile art in Portugal. Th museum is not very large, but you can easily spent 2h there admiring the tiles, the church and the gardens. I absolutely loved the museum! Portugal has always been worldwide known for its fantastic tiles! In Lisbon, the ancient "Convento da Madre de Deus" (literally, "Convent of the Mother of God" in English), dating from 1509, houses since 1965 the "Museu Nacional do Azulejo" (the "National Tile Museum"). Its collections - from the 15th century onwards - of tiles, ceramics, porcelains and faiences are absolutely unforgettable. Visit the museum, its permanent and temporary exhibitions, and do not miss the Convent itself - church, sacristy, chapels, choir, cloisters and innumerous artworks! We loved this museum! Wonderful examples of the beautiful Lisbon tiles spanning centuries and giving a great overview of the developing styles and techniques! Covid-safe, clearly marked route, friendly helpful staff and fascinating collection! We loved being able to see the tile conservators at work as well! Thank you so much for having us!! When we went their we feel so amazing begging point excellent describe about Portugal history and so many historic tiles on the wall. Very old building but strong & lovely place. One of my memorable vist.
