Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

While walking back to our cruise ship, we passed this ancient fountain, which is now a stone sculpture wall decorated with beautiful flowers. A clear vestige of the past.

This fountain was built around the 12th century.

It was to supply water to the fishing neighborhood of Alfama.

The fountain previously had six spouts in the form of animal heads, each intended for a different social groups.

The fountain has deteriorated due to the 1755 earthquake and only has three spouts left.

It no longer operates as a fountain.

Unfortutaly this old fountain needs to be sign posted to make it clear what a mainstate it was in Lisbon in times gone by. However it has been left to become delapidafed and I wouldn’t have given it a second look if our tour guide hadn’t told us about it!

Despite some of the past reviews we still chose to stay here. It’s an elegant mini Palace, only six rooms. Staff in particular Xavier and Ricardo went above and beyond to make our experience special. Very clean.
Great location, in the heart of Alfama with Fado all around. Bathroom was large and modern. We stayed in top floor, room Paula. Very spacious, full kitchen and living room. Very quiet, highly recommend it. The only problem is lack of elevator with guests with mobility issues.

Not to sure what to think of this. I guess the reference is to the facade of what once used to be a palace. The palace looks a bit run down. From street level a lot of red or purple blooms are visible growing from bushes or small trees on the roof of the palace. Some of the branches are hanging over the roof line. It one time there may have been a working fountain here. The house right behind this palace is pretty ornate and interesting.

The monument is pretty, yes, but I don't think it's worth traveling specifically to see it. If you are nearby go see it otherwise don't extend the route especially for that.

Beautiful and ancient fountain in Arabesque style, inserted on the facade of an equally beautiful building, we are in the Alfama area a stone's throw from the shore and the water, all this together makes the visit interesting. You will notice it walking along the street.

It dates back to the 13th century and seems to have been the first public fountain in the city; However, today's classic appearance is due to nineteenth-century interventions. It is a large wall fountain, as it consists of a long and high exhibition complete with a terrace, which could be mistaken for a palace; below, at a level lower than the current street level (two short stairways at the ends allow access), there is the narrow and long basin into which the water flowing from the spouts flowed: originally there were nine and it seems that each was reserved for a specific category of inhabitants (for example: one for white men, one for white women, one for Indian women, one for freed blacks, etc.). Unfortunately today, from what I have been able to observe, no water flows anymore. The large structure is still beautiful to look at, also due to the eye-catching building that rises above it, in a set back position; I certainly wouldn't put it among the destinations to go there on purpose, but if you pass by it, a stop is a must.
