Neighbourhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

We visited this church during our walking tour of Lisbon.
The church dates back to 1496. The church was damaged by the famous 1755 earthquake.
The new church was rrebuilt and the interior has a beautiful stucco ceiling, showcasing the Virgin being blessed by God and surrounded by angels.
The 16th-century statue of Our Lady of Restelo was transferred from a demolished church in Belém to this church and stands by the alter. The statue was prayed to by Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral.

The church is located a short distance from the north-eastern corner of Praça do Comércio and is characterized on the outside by the magnificent Manueline portal (16th century), the most prominent element of the entire building. The interior of the church, however, the result of the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755, is much less interesting and much more modest in size than the original one: a single short nave followed by a narrow and elongated presbytery which corresponds to the chapel of the Holy Sacrament of ancient church. More than the paintings of the altars and the statues, perhaps the most striking part is the polychrome decoration of the vault. The good rating assigned is for the aforementioned portal, not to be missed because it is one of the best examples of the Manueline style in the city, together with the monastery of S. Jeronimo and the Belem tower.

I was naughty. Easter Sunday walking past and they were closed for a private religious service. I could hear from the outside and the door was open so I quitely went in and stood at the back for a few minutes. Pretty with nice colours, 'intimate'. Worth a stop if your walking in the area. Just behind Praça do Comércio. It was also interesting to observe the ceremony.

In July 2019 there were free organ recitals at 1:30pm every day for a half-hour. The sound was incredible in the acoustic of this church, even though the organ itself appears to be quite small - lovely reedy/trumpety sounds and light and airy flutes as well. The organist played 16th/17th century Portuguese music. Highly recommended if you like early classical music, or just want to hear a beautiful organ in a fantastic acoustic. The interior of the church is beautifully decorated. Entry is free.

This Church offers Sunday Mass at 11:00 in English. The Church is quite beautiful on the inside - don't be fooled by the outside.

Generally when we've walked past this church has been shut, but from the interesting history board outside and the beauty of the entrance we knew we were in for a treat if we ever got to go inside.
Today, my wife noticed it was open so we popped in (it was free to visit). It was beautifully decorated and very well maintained.
Really central location, worth a few minutes of your time if only to appreciate the stillness and quiet in the middle of the city.

The church is often overlooked by the crowds of tourists which is a shame because it has a beautiful Manueline portal that survived the great earthquake in 1755. It was recently fully reconstructed and it is a real hidden gem of the city.

This church has a great facade and a magnificent ceiling. You could easily walk past as not the biggest of churches. The painted ceiling Is a joy.

While we were headed to Castelo de Sao Jorge, we stopped at this church for a quick visit. It has a beautiful Manueline Portal and there were not too many people inside which was relaxing and serene at the same time. If you have time be sure to see it.

This is a lovely and very unique church.
The altar is located under an arch, which makes the nave feel as if it belongs to another building.
Still, the church is beautiful and is well worth the visit (and almost no tourists visit it despite its central location).
