In the morning after breakfast, just behind our hotel, we went to start the small circular route through the Duna da Cresmina. Next to the bus stop "Praia do Guincho" you can reach a protected natural paradise on wooden planks. The path is blocked off all around with fences or ropes, and yet unfortunately you see too many "tracks" in the sand... Turn right and climb slightly to a viewpoint with a bench and fantastic panoramic views. Continue over a "sand field" to get back on wooden planks towards Cafe Duna da cresmina, with a very nice viewing terrace. From there you can either walk "up", via a parking lot to the nearest bus stop (to Cascais) or down through the dune towards Praia do Guincho. The Atlantic Ocean and the rocks in front of Cabo da Roca, respectively the Serra de Sintra, are always present. This "mix" of dune landscape and sea view has something very special and invites you to a very leisurely walk...

The best short walking trail in the greater Lisbon (about one mile).
And the bar/cafe at the top is also, in my opinion, the one with the best view in the greater Lisbon.
I know what I’m talking about, I’ve lived here for 50 years ;-)

If you are in the area stop by and take the nature trail to have a closer look at the sand dunes. It's a circular trail made of wooden planks perfect for an easy 40 min walk with beautiful views.

Many times we have walked in the Areia-Guincho Beach area and across the dunes on the boardwalk to the visitors center/cafe for lunch afterwards. So, one rainy Sunday morning, 22 members of International Women in Portugal enjoyed the 2.5 km guided tour on the boardwalk system through the dunes to learn about the unique flora and fauna that live in perfect harmony with the insects, reptiles and birds to form the unique delicate ecosystem of Guincho-Cresmina Dunes.
Our excellent guide, Tiago Lopes, with Cascais, Atividades Natureza Department, first gave us a briefing in the visitors center/cafe to provide an overview of the formation and maintenance and the need for strategic placement of fences, removal of invasive plants and planting of native plants to provide some stabilization of the ever changing dunes. He then adapted the walk to accommodate the different fitness levels of our members. Tiago's depth of knowledge and ability to communicate are outstanding.
I highly recommend this beautiful, informative walk.
There is plenty of parking, and the 405 and 415 buses from the Cascais bus terminal stop directly in front of the Dunas da Cresmina, Nucleo de Interpretacao.

We really enjoyed our circuitous walk around the dunes. The only disturbing part was watching some idiots sliding down restricted dune areas. Definitely spoiled the tranquility. Some people just don’t get it. And, you can tell this goes on all the time when you see all the foot prints, of the two- and four-legged kind.
Anyway, we stopped midway at the cafe for a coffee and beer. Large picnic tables are available for sharing and meeting new people if you are into that. It was a great place to get some shade and is dog friendly (keep them on leash). There is parking at the cafe and parking along the road. Easy access. You can start your walk on the boardwalk from either the road or the cafe.

I went to the nature park by e-bike (rented in Cascais). I had dinner at the small cafe, the salad and wine were very good and the view is stunning.I sat on the veranda almost till sunset, then I walked the wooden path back to the entrance. It was an enchanted evening.

We look for natural experiences when we travel, and in our own backyard as well. My boyfriend had been part of a work effort on the dunes to help restore them to more of a natural state a couple of years ago, so we went to check upon their progress after being rid of the noxious and invasive ice plant that pervades much of Portugal's shorelines. What we found on the roughly one mile loop boardwalk path was a trip into a serene place--even though we took our walk on a bright, hot Sunday afternoon in August. We encountered one other couple on the loop, and felt the ocean breeze to cool us in the 28-degree sun. Most of the dunes' human and canine intruders have been kept off, allowing the dunes to assume their most natural state (given there are still buildings on the shore that block part of the natural wind and sand. It took us about 45 minutes to walk the loop at a leisurely pace, then we stopped for a bebida at the café and to see the interpretive displays at the information center. A beautiful way to enjoy the seaside without the crowds.
