Neighbourhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

Very interesting museum

A wonderful museum! You can see here a lot of ship models, old weapons, old navigation tools and even a series of large scale boats.

Great information on Portuguese explorers
Sep. 2021 • Couples
We like to travel to new places. This time it was Portugal for 2 weeks. We spent 3 days in Lisbon and I highly recommend this museum. It really taught us a lot the exploring culture of the Portuguese and how important it is to their history and culture. It was definitely a highlight.

So out of date
May 2021 • Solo
As someone who sails this was an interesting place to visit, the models are amazing, even if only used as training tools.

Apart from that it is an outdated celebration of Portuguese colonialism. To see videos of half dressed Angolans waving happily at Portuguese marines is beyond belief in this day and age, so obviously staged and so obviously propaganda. That there is not even the slightest recognition of Portugal’s role in the Atlantic slave trade from West Africa is equally incredible. Elimina Castle still stands on the Ghanaian coast.

I appreciate that in these covid times things have been difficult for museums, but I was one of three (white) people in the place and I am not surprised. This is an archaic and out of touch institution.

As I left I saw a group of schoolchildren outside of all ethnicities, please do not take them in, it will reinforce too many prejudices and insecurities.

Very Interesting
Jan. 2020
Not big on museums nor am i a maritime buff, but i have to say this was a really great couple of hours spent.
I learned so much about the history of the Portuguese naval history and did so in an easy to wander setting. English and Portuguese explanations on all the displays.
The slant was definitely from a colonialist point of view but nonetheless less I learned a lot and enjoyed my time there.
We visited in January so there were very few people there!

Due to time constraints we were only able to see the outside beauty of this building which in itself was lovely to see and be in aware of. Well worth a look if in this area

Really Glad We Visited!
Dec. 2019 • Friends
This is a really neat museum and just when we thought we saw it all, we found the best part, the Gago Coutinho exhibit! You have to go outside and walk to another building. Once there you will learn about the life and accomplishments of this amazing man!

Good Maritime museum
Nov. 2019
This museum is hidden in the West wing of the Jeronimos monastery. It is dedicated to the Maritime discoveries of Portugal, but more to the people who made these discoveries. Everyone knows, for example, Vasco da Gama, but many names before this visit for most, I am sure, were unknown. Although part of the museum is currently being renovated, it leaves an excellent impression.

neat neat place --- love the map in the entry
Oct. 2019
DH and I went here with some friends ... popular with tour groups, so it did become a bit squishy toward the end. They were doing some renovation ... so some exhibits were off-limits. I loved all the detail and colors on the world map behind the statue of Henry the Navigator in the entry. Lots of unique exhibits ... check out the globe partway through that shows sky constellations.

A little disappointing
Oct. 2019 • Solo
I was fascinated with what I saw at the museum, however, a big part of it was going through renovation, and either I missed so much of the maritime History of Portugal or this is just an intentional, limited showcase. The tour took no more than 15 minutes. Shame!

Well done a very extensive
Oct. 2019
A truly exceptional maritime museum that celebrates the Portuguese explorations of the past as well as much more. You could spend an hour here and visit the exhibits on the famous expeditions or spend a day and dig deeper into the whole naval history .
