Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Praca do Comercio is located inthe heart of the city. It is Coimbra’s largest square. Praca do Comercio took its name due to the intense commercial activity that took place there. Surrounded by 18th-century apartment buildings and businesses, it’s not a monumental square , but over the centuries it was literally the “market square” where the people of Coimbra did most of their shopping. Now it is a quiet place to relax at an outdoor cafe. In a corner is the church of Sao Tiago, one of Coimbra’s oldest monuments. On the opposite end is another church, Igreja de Sao Bartolomeu, which dates from the 10th century but was much altered in a baroque style in the 1700s. The square is lovely and the atmosphere is magical. It’s reached via steps from Rua Ferreira Borges, downtown’s main pedestrian street.

We had a meal here, but should have wandered a few feet up hill to the main shopping street, which is more inviting. This is an open paved square, quite large with old buildings around. A few restaurants, not very good, are set up with umbrellas. Oppressive in the heat.

The name of the triangular square of Commerce speaks for itself. Initially, it was a shopping square, when Coimbra grew and began to grow in breadth. Several street names that start from the square bear the names of works or products sold in the square. For example, Rua Azeiteiras is a street of olive oil. The square begins with the squat church of San Tiago, and ends with the church of San Bartolomeu. To whom divine supervision was not enough to conduct an honest business, the Pelourinho (pillory) was intended. Now they sell, eat and drink here. Fun place...

What a beautiful city...so inviting. It's somewhere that our coach tour stopped for a lunch break, but the time ... well it will never do this city justice. We could have stopped for a lot longer and I am rather sure we would have all enjoyed looking around more.
We ate, we explored a little and took photos. The stores were terribly quaint with some amazing shopping opportunities. I would have enjoyed staying here exploring for much longer than I was able to.

Nice square 'in between the climbs' upstairs. Nice terraces and always something to be seen or to be done.

Set in the heart of the old Baixa (down town), Praça do Comercio is an ideal place to spot and enjoy a wonderful Portuguese expresso before ascending the steps to the Alta and the university. It is a large square containing an old chapel, where I saw an exhibition of medieval torture implements, numerous shops and cafés. The cafés also serve lunches and evening meals.

The central square has a range of Restaurants and Cafes as well as some of the larger Portuguese stores. During the summer they hold events here and often there are street stalls selling unusual and Artisan jewelry and clothes.

Just worth to walk there to see the activity. Sit down, order a beer, or just a coffee. Experiment typical pastries. And just take time to observe the buzzing activity!
