If you only visit one sight in Coimbra, make sure it is the Joanina library - the Baroque library of the University of Coimbra, according to some one of the most ornate libraries in the world - built in the 18th century during the reign...More

I'm not sure why this has been separated from the Science Museum and the remaining university sites, as it is part of the combined ticket for which you are charged admission; there is no way in which to visit the library in isolation, though you...More

Great library, the golden leaf detailing is extraordinary! One the best yet small niche libraries across the world. Certainly worth a visit!

Yes the Library is amazing as well as the collection of old books. It is very crowded and there are no pictures. Not sure how you could do a whole day tour here.

Well worth the time to visit and tour. Many of the Harry Potter buildings and ideas came from this university. The old library is wonderful. Take a guided tour, you will learn so much.

Historic library. The tours are great, with well informed guides and is quite inexpensive. I recommend it.

University of Coimbra, the few in the world that started globalization! Centuries of knowledge written, not virtual! There are no adjectives to give. For centuries the University that formed Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Macau, Goa-India and which trained half of the World.

Lot of effort for little reward. Too controlled for what is ultimately the purpose of the visit. Have to visit the prison - empty rooms. Then the ‘working’ library before you get THE LIBRARY. And then you are limited to 10 Minutes.
