Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As it is the oldest university in Europe, I saw many groups of students wearing black cloaks and hats when I visited. The Harry Potter-like costumes gave me the feeling of a European learning environment. After entering through the iron gate, you can go out to the courtyard and look around the old university. I wanted to visit the library as well, but I arrived before noon and all the viewing slots until the evening were filled. There was strict management so that you could not enter outside of the reserved times. It seems that you can make a reservation online in advance, so I strongly recommend that you make a reservation in advance if you want to visit the library.

This is a traditional university located in Coimbra, the third largest city in Portugal. Like many other Portuguese cities, this university has many ups and downs, and we had to work hard to climb the hills to get there. The atmosphere is very traditional and elegant.

This is the belltower in one of the main plazas of the university and very impressive. It is sometimes possible to ascend and get an even more wonderful view of the surroundings of the town but for mobility reasons we did not attempt this. The view from the balusrades of the placa were sufficient.

Located on the campus of the Universidade de Coimbra, this 18 th century clock & bell tower rising above the courtyard, is one of Coimbra's most famous landmark. You can tale a guided tour or go by yourself. Amazing views of the city and the Mondego river.

It's extra charged when buying tickets for university visit but it's not worth at all (even if it's only +1€ or 2€ if bought separately). If you visit royal palace you have the chance to see basically the same view from the balcony.

Definitely not a good option if you're claustrophobic, fear heights or dread steps. Otherwise it'll definitely be the best view of the city you will get. Perfect place for taking pictures in Coimbra!

Great views over Coimbra. However the ever narrowing stairwell means this one is not for those that suffer from claustrophobia.

The university is a must on any visit to Coimbra, especially the stunning Biblioteca Joanina, but this review is purely for the university's eighteenth-century bell tower. We climbed it today and were very glad we did, as it was a beautiful day and we were rewarded with a splendid view of the university, Coimbra, the river and the surrounding landscape. For anyone thinking of trying it, however, it is worth knowing beforehand that it is not only a tough climb but also the stone spiral staircase is very narrow and in places a bit claustrophobic. The staff make sure that nobody has to pass each other on the way up or down, which would be impossible, so there is no need to worry about that, but still it would be challenging for anyone uncomfortable in narrow spaces.
