Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Okay, so I have lived in the city of Castelo Branco for over two years now. So please keep this in mind while you read the following.

Castelo Branco, means White Castle. But the word Castle in the name is doing some very heavy lifting here. Actually, so is White.

This place dates back to the 15th century, and I am reminded of this every single time I step out of the door as there are little stainless steel disks on the ground reminding me that I am living and walking down historical streets.

If you make the long trudge up the hill to what they claim is the castle, (you can also drive to it) you are actually presented with just a small section of wall and a couple of towers. Granted, it is the best view of Castelo Branco, and from it you can see all the way to the snow-capped mountains of Serra da Estrela national park which is the highest point of mainland Portugal. They also offer Selfie Posts to position your phone on to capture that perfect Instagram pic. And because the air here is so clean, you really can see a long, long way into the distance. You can also see Spain on a distant horizon if you face the correct way.

But the fact is, little of the castle remains. If you think that you are going to see ruins like in Rome or something, then think again. However, if you keep your eyes open, as you walk around the old part of the town you will see many places where the old castle still remains in between the newer buildings.

The Castle of Castelo Branco, also known locally as Castle of the Templars, is located on a hill in the city. The castle was a strategic Iberian castle in the middle Ages, it was called the “Linha da Raia or Linha do Tejo”. It got severely damaged over the centuries, but anyhow the castle of the Templars still remains the most important historical-military record of the city. Inside of the castle, you have the “Church of Santa Maria do Castelo”. It was a Romanesque church without any steeple and had the bells on the wall, next to the entrance. The invocation of the temple to Santa Maria do Castelo was a characteristic of the Templars. From the castle we only have the ruins and the church was closed, as so many here are in Portugal.

Lovely town with lots of character. Plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, and nice to stroll around admiring the impressive buildings, churches and cathedral.

In Castelo Branco you can go sightseeing to the castello or the museums. There are nice gardens too. Shopping is good and there are good restaurants and cafees. You can easily spend a week here!
