Your driver needs to be very confident through narrow streets and hairpin turns, The chickens and ducks are a bonus; the views are stunning in all directions. - Neven HGatineau, Canada52 contributionsTough, but weirdI visited this park on my last day in Angra. After following the path around the (still active) army base, I reached the park. The park has many trails that are easy to follow, but still a bit steep, and will lead you to vistas where you can see whale-watching stations, remains of former fortifications, and even the caldera of the extinct volcano. But it did get weird. Climbing up the trails, I saw chickens, feral cats, Guinea fowl, and even fallow deer, and peacocks? At the top, there was a monument, and mobile binoculars, where you can look at the city from below. (I located my hotel, among other buildings) A definite must for anyone visiting Angra do Heroismo.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 18 April 2024
- Riddlerindc82 contributionsSpend some time hereI wish we had planned to spend more time here. While it was a great quick stop for beautiful photos, this is more than just a lookout - it is a nice park. There are some hiking trails, a playground and places to picnic. Next time I’d plan to spend a couple of hours and bring a picnic.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 July 2024

The hiking route is relatively easy and there are beautiful views of the island. The bad thing is that there is a kind of zoo where the animals are in terrible condition. How sad to even see this in Europe.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2024

Monte Brasil is an active Army fort with beautiful views of Angra do Heroísmo. It’s free to enter and hike the 2 mile round trip trail from sunrise to sunset. It took us about an hour to complete with several stops for photos. It’s the only place on the island deer live.

So I am assuming most visit to hike. My girlfriend and I were time pressed so decided just to drive up to the top when the sun peeked out on a Sunday afternoon. This is a great park and we may be back! A fun winding drive that gives you some outstanding photo opportunities.

This is a good spot to watch the sunset and see some of the nearby islands. It’s quite a long walk, we drove as had limited time. The road is narrow and goes alongside a military base with a sentry, they shut the barrier at 8.30pm.
Deer wander freely at the top of the hill, together with other animals.

The PRC04 TER route runs through the entire Mount Brasil in Angra do Heroísmo, the capital of the island. It is a 7.4 km circular route, of easy difficulty, which takes about two and a half hours with stops to take photos. The route is very well maintained: it has bathrooms at three points and picnic areas. Along the route you can see various animals from the cat colony to deer, ducks, roosters... You can also see the views from several viewpoints (some can also be accessed by car without doing the route). The Miradouro do Pico do Facho is the highest point of Mount Brazil, overlooking the capital. After this viewpoint, on the way down around the caldera, there is the detour to visit Forte da Quebrada, which are ruins of an ancient fortress. Subsequently, there is a detour to visit a viewpoint on one side where you can watch whales (in summer) and on the other, a former surveillance post from World War II. Reaching the end, we find the Miradouro do Pico das Cruzinhas and the statue of Alfonso VI, from where we have incredible views of Angra.

Mandatory place to visit on the island. The view over the city and the engagement with nature convey a peace that is difficult to match. If we add to this the well-traced trails, the places to eat with family and friends, and the rush of the whole area make this Monte Brasil one of the visitor cards of Terceira.

Once you figure out where to start your hike you are in for a wonderful experience. You actually approach the military guard station, turn left and start to follow the yellow/red markers along the trail. Make sure to see the first marker where you make a hard right turn, and yes, go up the very steep dirt path. Once you make it to the top you'll be greeted by chickens and a cat colony (cared for by volunteers). Enjoy the views!

We walked about half the trail up the mountain and had several panoramic views looking down in Angra do Heroismo. We stopped when we reached the Pico das Cruzinhas (cross) - the monument marking the Portuguese occupation of the Azores during the Age of Discoveries. Along the trail, we enjoyed the view of the caldera and the Cat sanctuary. We were told that the cats have all been given the required vaccinations and are regularly fed. Several of the cats were very friendly and would walk right up to us.
