Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Made up of three buildings, review of each as follows:
- Sacred art: nice building, the exhibits not really to our liking.
- Natural history: No explanation or context, just a barrage of stuffed animals. A real missed opportunity to discuss the cetacean species in/around the island, the history of whaling and how it’s now (rightly) been banned, and the history of animals on the islands.
- Local art: Small and unimpressive, a lot of portraits of unknown people.

We only visited the one building housing the convent and natural history displays. It seems odd that both of those are in one place but it works and it is really cool. Plenty of displays and the convent is really cool to learn about.

This Museum is really a very old church. The altar is intricately carved in wood. There are beautiful tiled images along both sides of the altar. It is an easy walk from the main Ponta Delgada city centre. There are also religious artifacts and paintings that are also worth seeing. It is truly a cultural gem.

Though this is a small collection, it is very good and has some of the most unique pieces I have seen. The architecture of the building is very interesting by itself. The wood carved altar is exquisite.

The woodcarvings at The Alter are the most elaborate that I have ever seen. This Museum costs 2e per person and is well worth the price. Besides the alter there is an art collection very nicely displayed in side gallery. Art from 17th & 18th century. A 1/2 hour is likely the time needed here.

The museum was varied and engaging and the entry price is very reasonable. However, it was a little disconcerting that staff were following us around and they were all oddly strict about the order in which the rooms had to be navigated.

For a well rounded understanding of the Sao Miguel area, this museum can't be beat! The natural history is remarkable; the convent is fascinating; the church craftsmanship is inspiring. The history area is the only place to get a timeline of the overall story of the island's development. Labels in English are clear. Make sure you go to both sections to see the entire place.

If I could have given this visit six stars I would have if only for the most amazing alter I have ever seen. It was just fantastic and almost impossible to look at for it’s intrinsic carvings seemed so complex that it was almost impossible to grasp it as a whole. The alter is from the Jesuit period and one of only a couple left in Europe. I could have sat and looked at it’s complexity for hours. Of the three museums for me this alter stands out and is a must to view. I have seen photos on Trip Advisor but NONE can capture the complexity and even the naked eye has difficulty.
The rest of the museum was quite interesting for some history of Sao Miguel and some of its wildlife but the jewel in the crown is the alter.

It depends on your interests but I didn't like much. There was a promotion so i just paid 1€ so for this price worth a visit. The church is nice and they have some interesting information about Sao Miguel's history and wild life

The Carlos Machado Museum has mixed collections of zoology, minerals, history, religious art, and so on. It is arranged in the annexes of an old monastery not far from the town hall; I was very pleasantly impressed by this museum in such a small town. In the next church (I think it is called St. Andrew) I was shocked by the wood sculpture of the altar - I have never seen such a beautiful and grandiose thing. Highly recommended for those interested in culture.
