Excellent use of 30 minutes

We left the castle and walked down to the archeological museum which was well laid out with a comprehensive history of the area and finds from various excavations. These inclulded a Moorish well 20m deep with a staircase spiralling down the outside to allow access to the water. We'd bought a combined entrance ticket with the castle so didn't pay to go in but the combined ticket was less than €4 each.

A modest entrance fee allows you to explore the Archaeological history of the area.Exhibits have descriptions in English as well as Portuguese, and the staff also speak good English. The upper floor also has an outside view over the town.Worth spending an hour of your holiday here.

This is impressive, well organized and planned. On 3 levels that progress in time from the Iron Age (6th Century to today). The well was only discovered in 1990. I was pleasantly surprised and not bored, well done!

The well inside is just like one I found further down the river

It is placed here because of the extraordinary well that was uncovered there. And it had a spiral staircase around it going underground for access.
Everything in the museum was found inside it, we understand.
More could be done to translate its history into English, and that of the surrounding area.
Funnily enough, that same morning we had cycled beside the river out of town and found a similar well (without spiral staircase) in an abandoned field. It was about 3m across, and built with drystone walls, too! (37.1767399, -8.4642741). My photo shows this one.

Small but very well-done museum of the town and region's archaeology

Very good value joint admission ticket to the castle and the museum. The museum is built over an ancient water 'well' of the old city, which is an amazing structure well worth seeing. The rest is well done, with the sort of stuff you would expect to find in such a museum, well labelled in English to help us that don't have excellent Portuguese.

Fine for a short visit

The museum is modern and quite well set out, but I personally didn't find all of the shards of pottery all that interesting. I did find the well very interesting and the view was spectacular - I loved all the nesting storks nearby! I would go back again just for those

Visited on a joint ticket with the castle - this was more interesting

Well laid out with interesting artifacts and good write-ups. Parallel English translations meant that I could understand the exhibits. The pottery is very impressive.
This is a push-chair friendly venue.
