After visiting the adjacent Chapel of the Bones, we found this church a bit of an anachronism: St Francis was modest and simple and yet this church in his honor is baroque and resplendent. We think it’s worth a visit but perhaps better if not so overdone.

It is one of the best attractions of the city. It is a very beautiful church and it embraces the Capela dos Ossos as well. Entrance is free. Embrace the serenity.

Absolutely a beautiful church which is nest door to the Chapel of the Bones. Originally built in 1376 but only parts of the church and cloister remain from that period.

They have a massive collection of Nativity scenes housed in a gallery above the church. Also magnificent views from the roof of the church.

This church is overshadowed by its Chapel of Bones but is a magnificent church. It has the longest vaulted nave of its type in all of Portugal with twelve open side chapels; extravagant gilding; blue and white tiles depicting biblical scenes; Flemish frescos; and overall gorgeous Gothic and Manueline architecture. It's one of the most beautiful churches we've ever seen.

This is next to the Chapel of Bones and is worth the small fee for entry. Your visit is preprogrammed for you as you will follow the hallways from floor to floor.

This plus the chapel of bones and the museum were really interesting to see. The church has some ornate chapels worth a photo but it's really the chapel of bones that is pretty cool. When we were there, the museum had an exhibit of nativity scenes collected from a local family and there were literally hundreds of them on display. We spent a solid 1.5 hours here, which included taking pictures of just about everything. The museum also provides some additional art and lengthy English descriptions on religion/history/the building.

A lovely historic church, worth a visit before or after you visit the Chapel of Bones next door. Free entrance here, while the chapel charges admission.

I walked in here thinking this was the Chapel of Bones but it turns out that is next door.

This is a well built church with high ceilings.

2022 Church of St. Francis, Evora

The Franciscan Monks started building this church and complex during the 14th century. The church itself was barren—pure-- for a long time until the Franciscans left. Wealthy families in the 18th century started to decorate the church making it more into a gold-plated Baroque style.

What most people come here to see is the Chapel of the Bones. Indeed, if you do not have a fear of seeing “bones,” this is the place for you. My wife walked in, and quickly walked out. There are 5000 bones—including skulls-- which 3 monks collected in over 40 cemeteries in Evora. There idea was to have people sway against the material life and adopt a more spiritual one. These bones are here to make you think. There is a saying (in Portuguese) on the entrance to the chapel, “We bones in here wait for yours to join us.”

Ironically, the three monks that arranged all these bones are buried in a white coffin in the chapel. Go figure.

Seeing the Chapel of the Bones will cost you about 2 or so Euros—actually quite nominal. There is a small fee to take pictures. I had my small camera in my pants not knowing there was a charge. The church, cloister and museum are free.

The cloister had impressive tile as we most remember. The museum is filled with plenty of church artifacts. There was no problem taking pictures without flash. Ironically, the Evora Cathedral Museum, locate near the Roman temple, would not allow pictures at all.
