Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This castle was builded in the 13th century. If the weather is clear you can see very far from the tower. The area around the castle is also very nice, narrow streets with cute, white houses.

Nice surprise - just as impressive if not more so than more heavily promoted castles (Sarges). When we went it wasn't crowded at all.

Beja was fantastic as they had craft stalls on and a Roman themed festival when we arrived
The square was full of food stalls. The castle was amazing to see and free of charge to go and climb steps for great views.

Beja castle is highly recommended if you are in the area on a nice day. As of November 2018 It had free admission, a free parking area (hope it's not full), and the restored structure is reasonably safe for able-bodied adults who can handle medieval spiral staircases, and take appropriate care to avoid falls (castles were built for military purposes, not child safety!) There are fine views from the tower, which is the highest point in the area - someone said it was the tallest castle structure in Portugal (?) The entry was through a door on the old town (high) side of the castle, near the restored Roman arch. The door was labelled as tourist information - unfortunately we arrived not long after they closed for their midday break (12:30-14:00 as I recall), so we did a circuit of the castle (looking for an open entrance) then wandered into town and shopped until they re-opened. Watch out for vehicle traffic (both directions) on the roadway between the parking area and the castle entrance. There is a public toilet across the road from the castle entrance. If you bring children to the castle, please keep them safe.

Beja Castle is a beautiful old fortification and the central attraction in the town. It is a well preserved and partly restored castle that allows you access to walkways and a tower that has excellent views across the countryside and the town. It also contains the local tourist information office. It is also (currently) free to visit so excellent value. There are also information signs in both Portuguese and English explaining the history of the castle at various points.
My only advice is to check opening times as it closes for lunch (I think 12:30-2:00pm) be sure to get there at a time that will allow you to look around.

The tower is particularly well preserved and from the top gives fantastic views around Béja. You can also walk around the walls.

Beja is definitely worth a full day trip. Lots to see, from the castle to the churches. Plan in advance if you want to see interiors as some places close midday and only reopen in the afternoon.

Probably the most must do in Beja, well worth visiting but not for the infirm or feint hearted. Great views , steep steps and no guard rails around the battlements. Very picturesque.

Dominating the landscape of Alentejo, the Castle of Beja has it's origins back to Roman times. It's been modified and enlarged many times over the centuries. Beja was under the Moors rule since 715. It was attacked several times by the forces of Portuguese kings and finally taken in 1037. King Dinis built the 130ft high watchtower, all of it made of marble. The ring of walls protected the castle and inner city with seven main doors.
