Remote , beautiful strand
Jul. 2021
Well worth a visit to this strand and if the weather is fine you could easily spend the day. (but bring everything you need ... theres little beyond parking there) Coral strand is a strange beach as it appears to be composed if coral pieces washed up from the sea. This is not the case however but I'll leave you to discover what it is for yourself when you visit. Beautiful scenery in every direction. .

Even on a winter day
Jan. 2020
Of course this beach is great on a sunny summer day, but we found it quite interesting on a cloudy, cold January day.
The texture, the shells, the water, the views and the locals keeping it litter free make for a delightful visit.

Top site around Galway

Loved this place! Absolutely stunning! The weather was also perfect, which contributed a lot. When you park the car, you can start walking along the rocks and grass, and enjoy the magnificent views over Connemara!
The water is very clear (like in the Caribbean) and not so cold.

Fantastic and interesting

Really beautiful beach with lots to explore- rock pools and climbing spots as well as clear sea to swim (there are jellyfish so be wary) and lots of coral and shells for those who like to look for interesting ones.

It's also a really peaceful beach. Perfect to reconnect with nature.

Beautiful little beach , we were there only last week and there was a pontoon out on the surf with about 20 kids on it, they were diving from it into the sea. It seem to be run by lifeguards and in a very safe environment. Right beside the beach is a stone wall recognisable in all this area and beautiful horses staring over the wall at you.

A small white strand beach showered with coral, and a popular walking destination for locals. Never too many people on this beach which is a great think. Well worth a visit.

Interesting place to visit, noit your usual beach

Unusual ground up Coral on beach, not sand. Takes a little while to get here but you are in a rugged part of the world. Visited Joe the boat builder, got a quick look at his shop. Interesting ride up and back from Galway. People I stopped to ask directions were, as usual, helpful and friendly. A nice side trip.

CAn Cheathrú Rua means a red, or rugged, area and is, indeed. true to its name.

We enjoyed visiting this area of natural beauty even if it was too cold for swimming. The fine white coral beach is in contrast to the clear blue waters; the coral, little pieces of hard algae produces a much rougher texture to fine sand and can be painful for walking. The notice made it clear that the beach did not have a lifeguarded at the time of our visit in mid-September but changing rooms and toilet facilities were provided. This beach has received the International Blue Flag award for 2014.We were particularly interested in the public sculpture by Edward Delaney which had been unveiled by President Higgins in 2016. The sculpture, entitled The Shadows of the Boats (Scáileanna na mBád ), which is made of stainless steel and black resin, was “inspired by the currachs, and black sailed Hookers that travel along the Connemara coastline”. The sculpturor was born in Claremorris, Co Mayo, in 1930, and died in Galway in 2009. is most famous for his bronze public statues in Dublin, including the Wolfe Tone and Famine memorial in St Stephen’s Green and the Thomas Davis fountain in Dublin’s College Green. He lived in Carraroe where he had a foundry and, even a sculpture park entitled ‘Beyond the Pale’.

Went for a day trip here recently. Absolutely beautiful and unusual beach. No sand just made from coral and shells. Amazing views all around. Lovely and clean also toilets and a lifeguard which is great.
