Annette from Camalou Battlefield Tours gave me a wonderful, full 1-day tour of the Ypres salient including the Battle of Fromelles in Northern France, and focusing on the main Australian Battles which was my request. There was a lot to take in, but I found it was a lovely balance of visits to Museums, Cemeteries, Bunkers, Craters, Memorials, Trenches and Monuments sewn together with a vast array of stories and local knowledge from 30 years of guiding tours here. We easily managed to locate a relative's headstone I was interested to find, and the tour culminated with me witnessing the Last Post at the Menin Gate which was very moving. I would have no hesitation in recommending Annette, and her husband Christian (who joined the tour at the end) for anybody, but in particular any Aussies and Kiwis making the trip over to learn about where our ancestors fought on the Western Front. A truly fantastic day.

We did a short tour today with Annette from Camalou battlefield tours and I am so glad that we did because it was a fantastic experience. Initially I was thinking to do some sort of self guided tour, however this would have been limited to a couple of sites as we only had a few hours. I was initially a little sceptical about taking a private tour fearing the cost would be prohibitive, however I could not have been more wrong. In terms of pricing a private tour is bound to be a little more expensive, however the personal service, attention to detail, and friendly demeanor of Annette meant this tour far exceeded expectations. Further Annette is such a knowledgable guide she will explain locations, weapons and conditions from strategic overview to finite tactical details. In short I rate Annette 10 out of 10, for this tour. Camalou is first class tour operator and when I return to Ypes I will contact Annette again to complete a longer tour.

Having read many reviews about the Camalou battlefield tour we were anticipating something very good, but even our high expectations were exceeded. We could not have wished for more attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable hosts and guides than Annette and Christian. The days were very full but there was always time for quiet reflection when we needed it. To be in the places that until now had been names in books was a powerful experience and at time extremely emotional. To be able to pick poppies from a farmer’s paddock and place them at the headstone of a great uncle who died at the age of 23 overwhelmed me with sadness, but also filled me with gratitude. In some way calling this a ‘tour’ doesn’t do it justice. It’s more akin to a pilgrimage. Thank you Annette and Christian for showing the way.

You will not find a more comprehensive, well organized tour of this subject or indeed anything. Worth every cent of the price and more

My wife and I have just done a 3 day private tour with Annette and Christian and I am pleased to be able to say that this is one of the best organised tours we have ever done. The genuine care and effort that was put into ensuring that we saw all the sites that were of significance to us was really touching. I had two relatives who fought on the Western front one who was killed and another who fought in a number of places and was wounded. Annette researched both these relatives and we followed their footsteps through northern France and Belgium. The hotel that they arranged for us in Ypres was great, it was well located on the main square and provided a very comfortable room. The transport provided was first class. Our tour was less like a traditional tour and more like being shown around by knowledgeable family members who were keen to make sure we enjoyed our visit. I cannot recommend this tour too highly. Thank you Annette and Christian for a wonderful tour and an experience we will not forget.
