It houses a diverse collection of artifacts, including tapestries, furniture, Chinese porcelain, historic lace and paintings, reflecting the city's rich history and artistic legacy. The exterior of the building is picturesque - though not sure why there is a huge green mound in the courtyard. You can purchase a joint ticket for this museum and the Church of our Lady which is just next to the museum.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024
- fabdogWilliamsburg, Virginia473 contributionsInteresting museumThis is a very interesting museum next to the church of our Lady. Covered by the museum card, 3 floors covering the history of Bruges. Most items are labeled in multiple languages. They have an audio guide you can use on your phone, but we gave up on it after a few roomsVisited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2024
- miffythevampirebatNottingham, United Kingdom165 contributionsGenuinely impressed, really thought throughI've been to a lot of museums but I have to say this is definitely one of the best laid out and best thought out. I absolutely loved the inclusion of so many sensory exhibits for anyone but also those who might not be able to see the exhibits. Loved the view especially over the canals and the church behind. Really worth your timeVisited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2024

Visited on a somewhat rainy day. It is not the biggest museum, with about 10-12 rooms but it is well laid out and has some beautiful paintings, and some sculpture. Free wifi and audio guide, as well as written 8x11 'cards' in each room in 4-5 languages. No umbrellas or back packs for wet jackets are allowed in but if you're there early or between the rushes they have complementary lockers or if you prefer or no lockers available coat racks and storage areas.

The Gruuthuse museum is housed in the former private residence of the medieval Lords of Gruuthuse. Upon entering the museum, we were met by the portrait of the most prominent member of this noble family, Louis (‘Lodewijk’) van Gruuthuse (1422 – 1492). As powerful advisor to the Dukes of Burgundy, he is wearing his collar of the Golden Fleece. It seems hard to imagine now but his fortune came from the monopoly on the sale of an herb mix used for brewing beer (‘grute’or gruit).
Like so many medieval buildings in Bruges, the Gruuthuse complex is far less medieval than it looks. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century it was restored and substantially modified in Gothic Revival style by city architect Louis Delacenserie. One of his additions is the monumental portal with an equestrian statue of Louis van Gruuthuse (1901) by sculptor Gustave Pickery, modelled after a statue of Louis XII, King of France.
The Gruuthuse Museum presents a wide variety of well-chosen artefacts (furniture, tapestries, lace, sculptures, paintings, documents, etc.) from Bruges’ Burgundian period, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. We liked the mix of traditional and interactive exhibits and enjoyed walking from one room to the next to gain a feel for the opulent house. The most unexpected and surprising part was the oratory upstairs, a private chapel enabling a direct view on the chancel of the Church of our Lady next door. The loggia of the museum offers charming view on the romantic surroundings. All in all, apart from the ghastly, grey mock gothic entrance pavilion, we liked everything about this museum and warmly recommend a visit.

We enjoyed learning the history of Bruges as a Hansa trading port. The rooms were not set up for living but rather to tell a different facet of history (books, lacemaking, jewelry, trade goods, cloisters, etc). We were there just under an hour-we were tired and they were closing in 30 minutes (5pm). We did not pay to see the OLV church but could view it from the family’s private chapel which was cool! 15 euro, no senior rate and no free toilet.

Audio tour equipment is provided with price of admission but it was not what we expected. The rooms are numbered but they do not correspond with the numbers on the audio guide. You could learn about Bruges by reading the signs provided next to each artifact. The museum does tell the story of the city but necessarily the story of the building you are in. Expect some narrow stairs As you walk through.

We walked from the Groeninge Museum through the Arentspark via the worth seeing “Bonifatiusbrug” to the Gruuthusemuseum. The former palace from 1471 offers an interesting insight into the living conditions of that time. Beautiful antiques are shown: Paintings, Flemish tapestries, interiors, stonework, etc. From the palace windows you can see the surroundings. And a small room on the 2nd floor. OG has windows to the Church of Our Lady. There you look directly down into the church.
We bought a Bruges card for 33 € per person and had free admission to this museum (otherwise 12 €). The Bruges Card for 72 hours includes 11 attractions - making it very worthwhile.

Interesting museum that tells a lot about the history of the city, since its foundation. The works are very interesting and the building has beautiful architecture. I recommend having at least 1 hour to visit. The ticket cost 15 euros. You don't need a guide to visit. Note: the only negative point I found was not having a bathroom for use by the public visiting the museum; There is a bathroom outside, but you have to pay separately.

It’s not really an art museum, it’s a museum of Bruges history with extensive and well organized collection. They have public wifi and free online media guide. If you like historical museums or have already seen other top attractions and still have free time, then go for sure. Especially if you have the Bruges museum card.

Gorgeous museum on the history of Bruges.
The building alone is absolutely worth a visit. It's also filled with an astounding collection of historical artifacts, illustrating the history of the area, the development throughout, and how the rich used to live around here.
They also have a lot of touch stations, which I haven't seen in this way in other museums before.
The audio guide is very well done, and there's loads to see. Don't skip this one!
