For those interested in Mary of Burgundy who ruled over Lowlands (1477-1482), you can see a nice equestrian statue along Geerwijnstraat at Muntplein just a few minutes northwest of the main sightseeing area at Grote Markt.
This is the work of Belgian sculptor Jules Lagae and was erected here in 1987. What you see is Mary in royal attire sitting on horseback. The horse is stamping its front left hoof. You'll also the shield with the Bruges Coat of Arms bearing the standing lion on the right hand side of Mary's steed.
It is a good statue, interesting to see if you enjoy monument viewing and are passing through this area of Bruges.

Bruges has many interesting statues, busts and monuments related to historical figures of Flanders including the small equestrian statue of Mary of Burgundy (Flandria Nostra) situated at Muntplein, a few minutes walk west of Markt.
This is an interestingly bronze monument to Mary of Burgundy (1457-82) who ruled over the Low Lands from 1477 to 1482 before her untimely death due to a hunting accident.
The statue is the works of Belgian sculptor Jules Lagae in 1901 and erected at this location in 1987. Here you see Mary in royal attire, riding her horse, perhaps the one she was riding at the time of her accident. On the right side of the horse, you'll find a shield with the code of arms bearing a standing lion. The statue is atop a basic stone pedestal with a plague with the name of the sculptor and his work.
Note: For those interested in Mary of Burgundy, you will find her tomb effigy at the Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk). This statue makes a nice complement to Mary's effigy.

This statue does NOT represent Mary of Bourgondy . I repeat NOT. It is Flandria Nostra , a personification of Flandres .

Whether it is an accurate representation or not, it is a statue that I find beautiful and come away from - every time - with a sense of wonder at the talent of someone who has created it. I would never leave Brugge without visiting this work of art which intrigues me.
