About
Windmills have graced Bruges' ramparts ever since the construction of the outer city wall at the end of the 13th century. Today four specimens are left on Kruisvest. Sint-Janshuis Mill - anno 1770- is still in its original spot and still grinding grain just like its neighbour Koelewei Mill. The Sint-Janshuismolen is the only mill you can visit. OPEN: 01/04-30/09
Duration: < 1 hour

Don't go up the windmill if you don't like heights. Worth the view but old wooden equipment doesn't float my boat. Also 8 euros entry one you climb the steps.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 April 2024

Nice parkland surrounding and leading up to these historic artifacts. It’s a ways outside the old town section, but, once you’ve run out of options, cruise over here for something unique.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2024

Its a little way out, a in a 20 min walk from the city centre, but it is stunning. It is a restored windmill and is the highest thing around for limes. The steps up are not for the faint hearted, it is very steep but the view at the top is good. you can get entrance with the museum card, or its 4 euros each. The guy inside didn't speak English on our day but they have printed cards with the info on, so you can read about the history. There are 4 in a row, but we could only see 3!!

One of four remaining old windmills in Bruges. This one was built in 1770, replacing earlier ones on the site. The mill was a working mill to grind flour. It is currently managed by Musea Brugges and is open to the public during selected hours. The Bonne Chiere windmill to the south, which is very similar in appearance, actually makes for better exterior and silhouette photos as there is no fence surrounding it like at Sint-Janshuismolen.

It was very interesting to see how an old wooden windmill is constructed and how it actually works. The mechanism appears to be quite simple but smart. It’s amazing, that entire construction can rotate to catch the wind. And that it’s not only a museum, but a functioning mill to produce flour to feed live stock. The feeling, how the construction vibrates, when sails rotate under the wind, rounds up the impression.

The environmental view is magnificent, just the walk along the canal lined with centuries-old trees to access the mill is already very resourceful. You have to climb a miller's ladder, it can impress but safe if you are careful. Inside the whole process of making flour from wheat grains is accompanied by an explanatory plate in the chosen language. Impressive and informative. From the mill window a beautiful view of the surroundings.

My first visit to Bruges and absolutely loved it. As we were only visiting for the day, we started off with a walk around the perimeter before heading into the centre. Loved finding the windmills, a hidden gem. Worth a visit.

Build in 1770 and still operational as a wooden cornmill (Bakkersmolen). Renovated in 2001.
Nice tour and place to visit.
And great to take pictures.

Sint-Janshuismolen is one of four windmills that line the northeastern ramparts and Ringvaart in the Historic Centre of Bruges. It is open for public visitation, providing opportunity for visitors to see the inner workings of a flour grinding mill. Opening hours are 9.30-12.30pm and 1.30-5pm daily. Entry is €4 per adult.
In addition to seeing the interior of Sint-Janshuismolen, it is also neat just to view the mill from the outside. There is a walking path that takes you up to each of the four mills, allowing up close views. Sint-Janshuismolen is the second in the line of mills starting from Kruispoort Gate.
Note: for good photographs, simply walk down from the rampart hill where you can capture the entire mill in your lens. Also try to visit In the afternoon or early evenings when the sun is at your back. This will allow you to take nice pics of Sint-Janshuismolen with blue skies in the background.

How long does it take to walk from the main town square to the windmills?
Thanks
Written 18 May 2015
Depending on the route you take around 20 mins. But I wouldn't go in a straight line but "zigzagging" to see as much as possible on the way. Then it may be up to 30 mins. It's really charming :)
