Maybe we didn’t have enough time to experience and fall in love with this city. The city center is small, the main's city plaza - Korenmarkt Square is overloaded with tram lines, pedestrians, cyclists, etc. Wanted to leave the square as soon as possible because of the feeling of insecurity. I liked the big building with prickly steeples (opposite St. Nicolas church) is the former post office, now transformed into a ritzy shopping mall complex. Don't hesitate to duck inside regardless this building seem medieval and inaccessible.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023

The city is like a lillte Amsterdam, with canals around. The best way to have a quick view of the place is to take the boat trip. 40mins, 14Eur with a guide, speaking both Dutch and English. The place is surrounded by mediaeval buildings and churches. It is magnificent and beautiful. Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants along the canal, where you can enjoy your day simplyVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 October 2023
- goodandniceEurope38 contributionsGhent a place to get lost...♥️🍺😉Wonderful and Romantic city with Channels and amazing old town. A lot of bars and cozy restaurants. Everyone speaks English (just if it's important :)) You can get lost in this "fairy tale" and afterwards get back to amazing memories. If you like to chat with someone who was born here and meet positive people - this is a place to visit. Small and not small at the same time. Just come and visit and you will understand:) Yes...and visit beer pub Yo's Place - bar tender will tell you wonderful stories about each beer. They have approximately 150 different kinds of beers. Enjoy 🙌🥳🥳😉🍻🍺🍻🫶🙌Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 October 2023
- Elias SaadAbu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates2,003 contributionsMagical cityGhent is a city where people enjoy life! A chilled-out place where anything goes and a city that feels human. Its friendly, welcoming people love the good life. Its pedestrianized center is known for medieval architecture such as 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbor.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 October 2023

Some of the grandest sites are here as well as some of the most beautiful historic buildings.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023

- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,073 contributionsIndeed a European Hidden GemDuring our Viking cruise, we only had one day in Belgium, and I am so happy we spent half of that day in Ghent. Ghent is indeed a hidden gem of Europe. The city center is fairly compact and extremely walkable. The canal winding through the city center adds a unique feel to Ghent, hearkening comparisons to the MUCH larger cities of Vienna and Amsterdam. The cathedrals, shops and restaurants are outstanding and quite diverse. There is even an ancient castle located in the city center. Spend as much time here as you can and you will not be disappointed.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2024
- anthony rAurora, Colorado229 contributionsA must visitAnother one of the absolutely amazing towns we visited while in Belgium. This one is especially good for the beer aficionados in the group. There are a lot, and I mean a lot of different cool and interesting beers to try here. There is also plenty to see for the non beer drinkers as well. It is the best of both worlds. If you like old architecture and things like that then you are in luck. Cool history so I recommend a guided tour before exploring on your own.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 February 2024

The city including its center is gorgeous no doubt and we have been coming here probably >50 times.
The problem today is the mobility if you are a tourist or on business and have to take your car. I have EV which at least allows me to get into the city. Great but why are the few loading spots reserved for shared vehicles only? Secondly there is an ununderstandable system of one ways and restricted areas developed by some kind of genius that even the GPS cannot absorb. Count for at least 100 euro a day in fines ( I suspect this might be the city’s objective in the end). In the end we couldn’t get to the hotel, there was no parking space and when we finally got in and out of an astronomically expensive public lot (vrijdag markt) we ended up getting fines for driving in and out of the parking lot. There must be some local demonish mind acting here? Geraard den duivel maybe ?

The city center of Ghent is hard to reach by car. Try to get permission on time to enter the LEZ when you have booked a room at Mariott. It is outrageous that only after 11 days you get answer by email that your request has been denied after 3 days trying to request online and the website was offline. No more Ghent.

Due to Low Emission Zone rules Ghent City Center has become inaccessible for Diesel Cars as from Euro 4. Should you enter by mistake, you will have to pay a 350 euro fine. Same goes for unregistered foreign cars : All vehicles with a foreign number plate must be registered. This rules apply to Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels. Other beautiful Cities like Bruges, Leuven, Hasselt and many more are free of entrance and certainly worth a visit!

My visit here was before the coronavirus (COVID-19) travel restrictions and ultimate shutdowns. While the journey to and from the UK went smoothly including my stay in Ghent, there was however, a noticeable reduction in the number of tourists on the move.
This was return to Ghent after a gap of over 50-yrs. The main purpose of this visit was to see an an art exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Beautiful architecture and views along the river, at every turn there is something beautiful to look at. We thoroughly loved the cobbled streets and finding lovely places in side roads. A University city it is full of students but it was also lovely to see lots of locals out enjoying the Christmas market.

An absolutely beautiful town, just like Bruges, but a lot more lively and less "fake." One great building after another, mostly good food and beers, and great musea.
The only downside is that parking was super expensive, it's an absolute chore to get somewhere, and they even sent us a bill for driving to the parking! LEZ my ass, you're not getting our money.

It has been many years since we visited Gent , we stayed in a hotel in the centre of town (about 1 km from the main square). In February it was not that busy with tourists. The city centre is clean and the architecture quite stunning. For us the main problem was the cyclists in the centre of town , they are everywhere and speed everywhere and expect you to get out of the way, they do not warn you of their presence, you really need eyes in the back of your head sometimes. Another potential problem are the trams in the centre of town , the pedestrian paths and the road are at the same level , when the paths are busy you can quite easily be walking where the trams run, on several occasions we found ourselves only a couple of centimetres from a moving tram. The centre of town has a large choice of restaurants , to visit the attractions it is quite expensive e.g. 12 euros / person to visit the small castle in the centre of town. You can get a city pass for 38 euros (pass to attraction and travel). For a weekend visit not sure its good value. The city centre is not that big most of the attractions are within walking distance.

I love Ghent, which is similar to Brugge in some ways yet larger and less intimate. The main central area is pretty compact with much to see and experience with some fabulous restaurants and of course those views. It's easy to get to from Brussels on a day trip with frequent and inexpensive trains throughout the day.

We ended up in Ghent on a whim after our weekend in Bruges became a day as we felt we had seen all there was to see.
Ghent was a wonderful surprise! Park for free under the train line at Gentbrugge and jump on either the train or tram into the city centre.
Ghent Tourist Information needs to up its PR game! People heading for Bruges are missing out on this total gem of a city! So much to see and do.
The bells rang out Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day'. How right they were!

Myself and my other half were lucky enough to walk around the city at the start of December, unfortunately before the market opened but we enjoyed it nonetheless. A very picturesque city, you can enjoy the different variations of architecture, from Medieval, Gothic, through to modern. There is plenty to see and we saw it during the day and night.
At night it was fairly busy and we took in some lovely sights and sampled a couple of the pubs, restaurants and bars. we had a great time wandering around and i would definitely recommend it as a day trip visit or mini weekend break.

I am traveling with a group of 39 people in August and we are staying in Liege where our training is. But in the way back to the ferry we like to stop and spend the day somewhere. Is Ghent worth stopping at and will entertain all ages? What is there to actually do there? We have stayed in Bruges before so don't particularly want to stay there again.

Ghent I think is better than Bruges. Beautiful city with canals and lots of history. Yes and good for everyone. Probably not so much for small children.

I am considering a wknd to Gent. I am 42 years old and prefer architecture and historical viewings sightseeing good food and shopping over days and a more social/open style drink at a club or bar at night. Any tips to see or recommendations for a good fun night out?
I know this is a bit random but I am orientating on thinggs to do while there.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me

We really like the bars at Vrijdagmarkt and also at this square, you can see the very beautifull building of Bond Moyson.
There's a hip food market not far from the Vrijdagmarkt: Holy Food market. Maybe a little expensive for what you get to eat, but located in an old church and very nice to hang out. At the other bank of the river, also located in the center, you can find Abajour. A nice restaurant/bar with a beautifull view on the river Leie. Don't forget to try a special beer. The bar 'Bierhuis aan de waterkant' is a very good choise to try something you don't know yet... If you're looking for an Italian restaurant, I can recommend: Nonna Stella. Very nice food and... you better hope you need to wait for a table so you can have a drink in the bar under the restaurant. I'ts like a time travel to the 60's. Speeking of time travelling, I think you should visit the 'Huis van Alijn'. Try to find the 'grafiti road' and just wander around through a very nice city. Take a boat trip on the Leie just to see the city from an other angle. Enjoy your trip!

Hi friends
I am visiting Brussels in June and would like to take a day trip to Ghent.
Please suggest the train routes from Brussels to Ghent and what kind of ticket is available?
Written 24 May 2018
There is a service from Brussels to Ghent. The main station in Brussels covers all destinations. Check when you buy your ticket for times.

Looking to spend 3 nights in Brussels or Ghent (knowing we can easily get to Antwerp, Bruges, etc). Is Ghent too similar to Antwerp and Bruges and we should therefore stay in Brussels instead of Ghent (for variety?). Thanks!
Written 17 May 2018
Ghent and Bruges have some similarities as quaint historic towns. Antwerp is a bit bigger but not as large as Brussels. Personally a shorter visit to Brussels and more time in Ghent and Bruges is the way I would go.

I am planning to visit Ghent for a few days but also want to visit Bruges. Is there a day trip to Bruges or would it be best to spend a night there before returning to London?
Written 6 October 2017
Hi - there are no doubt tours you could take, but it's easy to do it without one. Trains (and buses?) apparently leave regularly from Ghent station and reach Bruges station within half an hour. We've been to Bruges on a previous trip and parked at Bruges station so I know it's an easy stroll to the historic centre from there. Enjoy climbing the tower!
Regards, Allan
