Its just a big red cannon but the story, the history behind it is more important. Its painted in red now because Original it was red. It was called the big red devil and is made in 1431. People in Ghent are calling it the "Dulle Griet". Impressive of lenght and weight thats for sure espeially for that time. Sad... More

You'll probably walk past the Dulle Griet many times whilst looking at Ghent's sights so you'll naturally go and have a look and take some photos. It is situated in the corner of a square set back slightly and right next to the canal. It has a historical meaning but as a monument it is rather bland.

It's a huge (12 Ton) red iron cannon, but not much more... You can take a picture and go on your way.

It was quite strange to approach a red cast-iron cannon that was way longer than myself. However, it isn't dangerous any longer. It's covered with glass; no cannon balls will ever go though there any longer. In fact, no cannon balls have ever been fired through this cannon! Locals call it "de Dulle Griet" or in English "Evil Woman". This... More

One of the famous things to see in Ghent: the 'dulle griet' or translated: the angry woman. Nice story about this canon.

We passed this relic a number of times as it was close to our hotel. The story is better than the sight in some respects, apparently it only killed one person, who happened to be standing behind and firing it. It was never used in anger again, and is now a symbol of peace.

Just a big, red canon. Stumbled upon it while walking around the city. Nothing spectacular actually.

This is a giant cannon. Our tour guide took us there and explained that this cannon was fired once and broke. They fixed the cannon and placed it here ever since. They never fired the cannon ever again. Funny story.

Viewed from the river so we walked around to see how big this was. Worth doing that but this is a small local landmark free to see rather than a special relic
